Whenever We have intended to destroy a town, it was because We sent Our commandments to its people who were leading easy lives but they showed disobedience; as a result Our judgement was passed, and We razed that city to the ground.

And how many of the generations did We destroy after Nuh! and your Lord is sufficient as Knowing and Seeing with regard to His servants’ faults.
17:18
If any do wish for the transitory things (of this life), We readily grant them – such things as We will, to such person as We will: in the end have We provided Hell for them: they will burn therein, disgraced and rejected.
Meaning:-
Transitory: temporary, brief, short, short-lived, short-term.
17:19
But whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts the effort due to it while he is a believer – it is those whose effort is ever appreciated [by Allah ].
Meaning:-
exerts: strive, try hard, make an/every effort, endeavor,
17:20
We provide both the former and the latter from the bounty of your Lord. And the bounty of your Lord can never be withheld.
Meaning:-
Bounty: a generous gift, a monetary gift or reward.
17:21
See how We have favoured some over others ˹in this life˺, but the Hereafter is certainly far greater in rank and in favour.
17:22
Do not set up another deity besides God, or you will be sitting disgraced and forsaken.
Meaning:-
Deity: God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess, Fake God.
Disgraced: Loss of honor, respect, or reputation; shame. dishonor or is dishonorable or shameful.
forsaken: Forgotten, left behind, and not cared for, to leave someone forever.
17:23
For your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And honour your parents, good treatment. If one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, never say to them ˹even˺ ‘uff,’ nor yell at them. Rather, address (speak) them respectfully (noble word).
Meaning:-
Decreed: authoritative order, An authoritative order having the force of law.
Uff: “uff” is simply an expressive word used in exclamation when someone finds a situation to be extremely annoying, surprising, astonishing, exhausting.
17:24
And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.”
17:25
Your Lord knows best what is within yourselves. If you are righteous, He is certainly All-Forgiving to those who ˹constantly˺ turn to Him.
17:26
And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.
17:27
Indeed, the spendthrifts are brothers of the Shayatin (devils), and the Shaytan (devils) is ever ungrateful to his Lord.
Meaning:-
Spendthrifts: a person who spends money in an extravagant, irresponsible way.
17:28
but if, while seeking some Bounty that you expect from your Lord, you turn them down, then at least speak some word of comfort to them.
Meaning:-
Bounty: a large amount, a generous gift. generosity; liberality, a monetary gift or reward.
17:29
And let not your hand be tied (like a miser) to your neck, nor stretch it forth to its utmost reach (like a spendthrift), so that you become blameworthy and in severe poverty.
Meaning:-
Miser: a person who hoards wealth and spends as little money as possible.
Spendthrift: a person who spends money in an extravagant, irresponsible way.
17:30
Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Acquainted and Seeing.
Meaning:-
Acquainted: make someone aware of or familiar with.
(“acquainted with someone” means to get to know somebody. You meet a person and got to know this person so you became acquainted with that person.)
17:31
And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.
17:32
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
Meaning:-
immorality: wickedness, immoral behavior, badness, evil, vileness, corruption, dishonesty
17:33
You shall not kill anyone whom Allah has forbidden, except for just cause under the law. If anyone is killed unjustly, We have granted the right of retribution to his heir, but let him not carry his vengeance too far in killing the culprit through taking the law in his own hands, as he is supported by the law.
Meaning:-
Retribution: punishment, penalty,
Vengeance: revenge, retribution, retaliation, payback,
Culprit: a person who is responsible for a crime or other misdeed.
17:34
You shall not go near the property of an orphan, except with the good intention of improving it, until he attains his maturity. You shall fulfill your pledges; surely you shall be held accountable for your pledges.
Meaning:-
pledge: promise, undertaking, vow, word, word of honor, commitment, assurance, oath, guarantee
17:35
And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even balance. That is the best [way] and best in result.
17:36
You shall not follow anyone blindly in those matters of which you have no knowledge, surely the use of your ears and the eyes and the heart – all of these, shall be questioned on the Day of Judgement.
17:37
And do not walk on the earth arrogantly. Surely you can neither crack the earth nor stretch to the height of the mountains.
Meaning:-
Arrogant: a sense of superiority, self-importance, having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one’s own importance or abilities.
17:38
The evil of all these actions is hateful to your Lord.
17:39
This is part of the wisdom which your Lord has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺. And do not set up any other god (deities) with Allah ˹O humanity˺, or you will be cast into Hell, blameworthy, rejected.
Meaning:-
Deity: God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess, Fake God.
Blameworthy: responsible for wrongdoing, having done something wrong.
17:40
Has your Lord favoured you ˹pagans˺ with sons and taken angels as ˹His˺ daughters? You are truly making an outrageous claim.
Meaning:-
Pagan: is a person who worships many gods or who worships nature and the Earth.
Outrageous: very shocking or unreasonable; extremely unusual and shocking.
Explanation: Some pagans had the belief that the angels are the daughters of Allah.
17:41
And We have explained in this Qur’an in various ways, for them to understand; and it increases nothing except their hatred towards it.
17:42
Say, [O Muhammad],˺ “Had there been other gods besides Him—as they claim—then they would have certainly sought a way to ˹challenge˺ the Lord of the Throne.”
Meaning:-
sought: to go in search of : look for.
17:43
Glory be to Him! He is far above the things that they say about Him.
17:44
The seven heavens, the earth, and all those in them glorify Him. There is not a single thing that does not glorify His praises—but you ˹simply˺ cannot understand their glorification. He is indeed Most Forbearing, All-Forgiving.
Meaning:-
Forbearing: to be patient or self-controlled when subject to annoyance or provocation.
17:45
When you recite the Qur’an, We put a hidden barrier between you and those who do not believe in the hereafter.
Meaning:-
Barrier: something that makes it difficult for people to understand each other.
17:46
And We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And when you mention your Lord alone in the Qur’an, they turn back in aversion.
Meaning:-
Aversion: a strong dislike or disinclination.
17:47
We are most knowing of how they listen to it when they listen to you and [of] when they are in private conversation, when the wrongdoers say, “You follow not but a man affected by magic.”
Meaning:-
Wrongdoer: a person who behaves illegally or dishonestly; an offender.
17:48
See how they call you names ˹O Prophet˺! So they have gone so ˹far˺ astray that they cannot find the ˹Right˺ Way.
Meaning:-
Astray: into error, away from the correct path or direction
Explanation on call names: as a magician, a poet, a fabricator, and madman.
17:49
And they say, “When we are bones and crumbled particles, will we [truly] be resurrected as a new creation?”
17:50
Tell them: “(Yes, most certainly you shall be brought back to life), even if you be stones or iron
17:51
or even something harder than this that you may think of.” Then they will ask: “Who will restore us?” Say: “The One Who created you the first time.” Then they will shake their heads at you and ask: “Well, when will this be?” Say, “It may be quite soon!
17:52
It will be on the Day when He will call you and you will raise up in response to it, with His praise, thinking that you have stayed (on the earth) but a little while.”
17:53
Tell My servants that they should speak only what is the best. Surely shaitan stirs up trouble among them. The fact is that shaitan is an open enemy to mankind.
17:54
Your Lord knows you best. He may have mercy on you if He wills, or punish you if He wills. We have not sent you ˹O Prophet˺ as a keeper (guardian) over them.
17:55
Your Lord knows best all those in the heavens and the earth. And We have surely favoured some prophets above others [in various ways], and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].
Meaning:-
Psalms: Zabur (Arabic) is the holy book of Dawud (David), one of the holy books revealed by God before the Qur’an, alongside others such as the Tawrat (Torah) of Musa (Moses) and the Injil (Gospel) of Isa (Jesus).
17:56
SAY: “Call upon those [beings] whom you imagine [to be endowed with divine powers] beside Him- and [you will find that] they have it not in their power to remove any affliction from you, or to shift it [elsewhere].
Meaning:-
Endowed: to furnish, as with some talent, faculty, or quality.
Divine: of or relating to a god, especially the Supreme Being.
Affliction: (of a problem or illness) cause pain or suffering to; affect or trouble.
17:57
˹Even˺ the closest ˹to Allah˺ of those invoked would be seeking a way to their Lord, hoping for His mercy, and fearing His punishment. Indeed, your Lord’s punishment is fearsome.
Meaning:-
Invoked: call on (a deity or spirit) in prayer, as a witness, or for inspiration.
17:58
There is not a town but We shall destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment; this fact has been recorded in the Eternal Record.
Meaning:-
Eternal: lasting or existing forever; without end or beginning.
17:59
And nothing stops Us from sending signs (miracles) only because the men of former generations treated them as false. For example, We sent the she-camel to the people of Thamud – a manifest sign – but they laid violent hands on her. We send the signs only by way of warning, and if people reject the sign after receiving it, they are doomed.
Meaning:-
False: not true, based on mistaken ideas.
Manifest: to make clear or obvious to the eye or mind or the understanding; show plainly
Doomed: likely to have an unfortunate and inescapable outcome; ill-fated.
17:60
Remember, O Muhammad! We told you that your Lord encompasses mankind. We have made the Vision which We showed you, and the cursed tree of Zaqqum which is mentioned in the Qur’an, a test for these people of Makkah. We are giving them warning to be fearful but it only increases their inordinate transgression.
Meaning:-
Encompass: surround and have or hold within, to form a circle about : enclose.
Zaqqum: (Arabic) is a tree that “springs out of the bottom of hell-fire” or Jahannam. It is mentioned in verses 17:60 (as the “cursed tree”), 37:62-68, 44:43, and 56:52, of the Quran.
Inordinate: unreasonable, unjustifiable, unwarrantable, disproportionate, unwarranted, unnecessary,
Transgression: violation of a law, command, etc.; sin.
17:61
And ˹remember˺ when We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam,” They all prostrated except Iblees (Shaitan), who replied: “Should I prostrate to the one whom You have created from mud?”
Meaning:-
Prostrate: lying stretched out on the ground with one’s face downward, especially in reverence or submission.
17:62
[Iblees] said, “Do You see this one whom You have honored above me? If You delay me until the Day of Resurrection, I will surely destroy his descendants, except for a few.”
Meaning:-
Descendants: a person who is related to you and who lives after you, such as your child or grandchild, successor, disciple.
17:63
Allah said: “Go away! Hell is your reward, and the reward of those who follow you, an ample reward it shall be.
Meaning:-
Ample: more than enough; plentiful.
17:64
You may try to allure whomsoever you can with your seductive voice, muster against them all your cavalry and infantry, be their partner in their riches and their children, and promise them what you will – the promises of shaitan are nothing but deception
Meaning:-
Allure: the quality of being powerfully and mysteriously attractive or fascinating.
Seduce: to lead astray, as from duty, rectitude, or the like; corrupt.
Muster: assemble (troops), especially for inspection or in preparation for battle.
Cavalry: soldiers who fought on horseback.
Infantry: soldiers marching or fighting on foot; foot soldiers collectively.
Deception: the action of deceiving someone.
17:65
˹Allah added,˺ “You will truly have no authority over My ˹faithful˺ servants.” And sufficient is your Lord as a Guardian.
17:66
It is your Lord who drives the ship for you through the sea that you may seek of His bounty. Indeed, He is ever, to you, Merciful.
Meaning:-
Bounty: generosity; liberality, a monetary gift or reward.
17:67
Whenever any adversity strikes you at sea, you ˹totally˺ forget all ˹the gods˺ you ˹normally˺ invoke, except Him. But when He delivers you ˹safely˺ to shore, you turn your backs upon Him. Indeed, man is ever ungrateful.
Meaning:-
Adversity: difficulties, misfortune, bad luck, trouble, hardship, distress, disaster, suffering.
Invoke: appeal to, pray to, call on (a deity or spirit) in prayer, as a witness, or for inspiration.
17:68
Do you feel secure that He will not cause the land to swallow you up, or unleash upon you a storm of stones? Then you may not find anyone to protect you.
Meaning:-
Unleash: to free from, to release from.
17:69
Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back to sea once again, and send upon you a Violent storm, drowning you for your denial? If that happens, then you will not find anyone who can question Us regarding this end of yours.
Meaning:-
Violent Storm: with extremely strong winds and heavy rain.
17:70
It is Our favor that We have honored the children of Adam, blessed them with conveyances on land and sea, provided them with good and pure things and exalted them above many of Our creatures.
Meaning:-
conveyance: a means of transportation; a vehicle.
17:71
Just imagine the scene of that Day when We shall call every community with their respective Imams (leaders): then those who will be given their ‘book of deeds’ in their right hand will read it with pleasure and they will not be wronged in the least.
17:72
But those who have played blind in this world will be blind in the hereafter, and ˹even˺ far more astray from the ˹Right˺ Way.
Meaning:-
Astray: into error, away from the correct path or direction
17:73
Verily, they were about to tempt you away from that which We have revealed (the Quran) unto you (O Muhammad), to fabricate something other than it against Us, and then they would certainly have taken you a friend!
Meaning:-
Fabricate: falsify, fake, invent or concoct (something), typically with deceitful intent.
17:74
If We had not made you stand firm, you would almost have inclined a little towards them.
Meaning:-
Firm: Strongly felt and unlikely to change.
Inclined: interested in something.
17:75
In that case, We would have made you taste a double portion (of punishment) in this life and a double portion (of punishment) after death. And then you would have found none to help you against Us.
17:76
They almost scare you off the land, to expel you from it. If they do so, they will not be able to stay here much longer after you.
Meaning:-
Expel: to force to leave, to force someone out.
17:77
(This is Our) course with regard to those of Our messengers whom We sent before you, and you shall not find a change in Our course.
17:78
Keep the prayer established, from the declining of the sun until darkness of the night, and the Qur’an at dawn; indeed the angels witness the reading of the Qur’an at dawn.
Meaning:-
Declining: nearing its end.
Dawn: the first appearance of light in the sky before sunrise.
17:79
During a part of the night, pray Tahajjud, an additional prayer for you (O Muhammad), very soon your Lord may exalt you to ‘Maqam-e-Mahmood’ (a station of great glory).
17:80
And say, “My Lord! Grant me an honourable entrance and an honourable exit and give me a supporting authority from Yourself.”
17:81
And say, “Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.”
17:82
We have revealed the Qur’an which is a healing and a mercy to the believers, while to the wrongdoers it adds nothing but loss.
Meaning:-
Wrongdoer: a person who behaves illegally or dishonestly; an offender.
17:83
Man is a strange creature: when We bestow Our favors on man, he turns his back and drifts off to one side (instead of coming to Us) and whenever evil touches him, he gives himself up to despair.
Meaning:-
Bestow: an honor, right, or gift
Drifts: a driving movement or force; impulse; impetus; pressure.
Despair: the complete loss or absence of hope.
17:84
O Prophet say to them: “Everyone acts according to his own disposition; but only your Lord knows best who is on the Right Way.”
Meaning:-
Disposition: temperament, nature, character, constitution, mentality
17:85
They put you questions about Ar-Ruh (the Spirit). Tell them: “The Spirit is at my Lord’s command and I am not given any knowledge of it but a little.”
17:86
And if We willed We could surely take away that which We have revealed to you by inspiration (i.e. this Quran). Then you would find no protector for you against Us in that respect.
17:87
But your Lord has blessed you with this knowledge; surely His goodness to you has been great indeed.
17:88
Say, “If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants.”
17:89
In this Qur’an We have used different methods to make the people understand the Message, but most of mankind refuse (the truth and accept nothing) but disbelief.
17:90
And they say: “We shall not believe in you (O Muhammad), until you cause a spring to gush forth from the earth for us;
Meaning:-
Spring: Spring means a source of water from the ground.
Gush: to flow out, forcibly, sudden overflow.
17:91
or until a garden of date-palms and grapes be created for you and you cause rivers to flow in it;
17:92
or until you cause the sky to fall upon us in pieces as you have threatened us; or you bring Allah and the angels before us face to face,
17:93
or until you have a house of gold, or you ascend to the sky – we shall not even believe in your ascendance until you bring down to us a book that we can read.” O Muhammad, tell them: “Glory to my Lord. I am only man and a messenger.”
Meaning:-
Ascend: go up or climb., rise through the air.
Ascendance: increasingly successful or powerful.
17:94
Nothing prevented people from belief when guidance came to them except the excuse: “What! Has Allah sent a man like us to be a Messenger?”
Meaning:-
Prevent : to hold or keep back.
17:95
O Muhammad, tell them: “Had there been in the earth angels walking about as settlers, We would certainly have sent down to them an angel from heaven as a Messenger.”
17:96
Say, “Sufficient is Allah as Witness between me and you. Indeed he is ever, concerning His servants, Acquainted and Seeing.”
Meaning:-
Acquainted: make someone aware of or familiar with.
17:97
And whoever Allah guides – he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray – you will never find for them protectors besides Him, and We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection [fallen] on their faces – blind, dumb and deaf. Hell will be their home. Whenever its flames die down, We will flare it up for them.
Meaning:-
Astray: into error, away from the correct path or direction
Flare: a sudden brief burst of bright flame.
17:98
That is their recompense, because they denied Our verses and said: “When we have become bones and dust, shall we really be raised in a new creation?’
17:99
Can they not see that Allah Who has created the heavens and the earth has power to create the people like them? He has set a deadline for their lives, there is no doubt about it: yet the wrongdoers refuse to do anything except deny.
Meaning:-
Wrongdoer: a person who behaves illegally or dishonestly; an offender.
17:100
Say (to the disbelievers): “If you possessed the treasure of the Mercy of my Lord (wealth, money, provision, etc.), then you would surely hold back (from spending) for fear of (being exhausted), and man is ever miserly!”
Meaning:-
Miserly: stingy, unwilling to spend any money.
17:101
We surely gave Moses nine clear signs. ˹You, O Prophet, can˺ ask the Children of Israel. When Moses came to them, Fir’on (Pharaoh) said to him, “I really think that you, O Moses, are bewitched.”
Meaning:-
Bewitched: cast a spell on and gain control over (someone) by magic.
17:102
Musa replied: “You know it very well that no one except the Lord of the heavens and the earth has sent down these signs as eye-openers, and O Fir’on (Pharaoh), surely I think that you are doomed.”
Meaning:-
Doomed: certain to fail, die, or be destroyed
17:103
So Fir’on (Pharaoh) wanted to scare the Israelites out of the land ˹of Egypt˺, but We drowned him and all of those with him.
17:104
Thereafter We said to the Children of Israel: “Settle down in the land and when the promise of the hereafter comes to be fulfilled, We shall assemble you all together.”
17:105
We have revealed the Qur’an in Truth, and with the Truth it has come down: and O Muhammad, We have sent you only to give good news to the believers and to warn the unbelievers.
17:106
We have divided the Qur’an into sections so that you may recite to the people with deliberation, and We have sent it down in gradual revelations to suit particular occasions.
Meaning:-
Deliberation: long and careful consideration or discussion, slow and careful movement or thought.
17:107
Say, “Believe in it or do not believe. Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it – when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration,
Meaning:-
Prostrate: lying stretched out on the ground with one’s face downward, especially in reverence or submission.
17:108
and say, ‘Glory be to our Lord! Our Lord’s promise has been fulfilled.’
17:109
And they fall upon their faces weeping, and the Qur’an increases them in humble submission.
17:110
O Prophet, say to them: “Whether you call Him Allah or call Him Rahman; it is all the same by whichever name you call Him because for Him are all the Finest names. Offer your prayer neither in too loud a voice nor in too low a voice but seek a middle course
17:111
and say: “Praise be to Allah, the One Who has begotten no son and Who has no partner in His Kingdom; nor He is helpless to need a protector, and glorify His greatness in the best possible way.”
Meaning:-
Begotten which means to father or produce as offspring (Offspring: a person’s child or children).
18:1
Praise be to Allah Who has revealed the Book (the Quran) to His servant and did not make it complicated.
18:2
It is straightforward so that He may warn about the terrible punishment for the unbelievers from Him and give good news to the believers who do good deeds that they shall have a goodly reward,
18:3
which they will enjoy forever.
18:4
Further to warn those who say “Allah has begotten a son.”
Meaning:-
Begotten is the past participle of the verb Beget: To produce (children) by sexual reproduction.
18:5
They have no knowledge about it, nor do their forefathers, this is a monstrous word that comes from their mouths. They speak nothing but a lie.
Meaning:-
Monstrous: inhumanly or outrageously evil or wrong.
18:6
O Muhammad! You probably will kill yourself in grief over them, if they do not believe in this Message (The Qur’an).
Meaning:-
Grief: sorrow, heartbreak, pain, distress, to suffer disappointment.
18:7
We have decked the earth with all kinds of ornaments to test the people and to see which of them do the best deeds.
Meaning:-
deck: decorate, garnish, cover.
18:8
In the end We shall reduce all that is on it to a barren wasteland.
Meaning:-
Barren: not producing results; fruitless:
18:9
Do you think that the Companions of the Cave and of Ar-Raqeem (this may refer to the name of their dog, or the tablet on which their names are inscribed or the mountain in which the cave is situated) were among Our wonderful signs?
Meaning:-
Inscribed: to write, print, mark, or engrave (words, characters, etc.).
18:10
When those young men took refuge in the cave, they said “Our Lord! Have mercy on us from Yourself and guide us out of our ordeal.”
Meaning:-
Refuge: shelter, protection, safety, security, asylum.
Ordeal: a painful or horrific experience, any extremely severe or trying test, experience, or trial.
18:11
So We put upon their ears a cover (put them into a deep sleep) for a number of years in the cave,
18:12
and then awakened them to find out which of the two parties (believers and nonbelievers who were arguing about the fact of life after death) could best tell the length of their stay.
18:13
Now We tell you their real story. They were young men who believed in their Lord, and on them We had bestowed Our guidance.
Meaning:-
Bestowed: to present as a gift, an honor
18:14
We put courage in their hearts when they stood up and declared: “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, we shall never appeal to any other deity except Him, for if we do, we shall be saying something improper.
Meaning:-
Deity: God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess, Fake God.
18:15
These people of ours have taken for worship other gods besides Him; if they are right, why do they not bring forth any convincing proof of their divinity? Who is more wicked than the one who invents a lie about Allah?”
Meaning:-
Divinity: Divinity is the nature or quality of being God, which can be a god
Wicked: evil or morally bad in principle or practice; sinful; iniquitous:
18:16
(They said one to another), `So (now) when you have left them and that which they worship apart from Allâh, you should take shelter in the Place of Refuge. (If you do so) your Lord will extend to you His mercy and will provide some ease for you in (this) affair of yours.´
Meaning:-
Refuge: shelter, protection.
18:17
And you would have seen the sun, as it rose, inclining away from their cave to the right, and as it set, declining away from them to the left, while they lay in its open space. 1 That is one of the signs of Allah. Whoever Allah guides is truly guided; but he whom He lets go astray, you will never find for them a guiding mentor.
Meaning:-

18:18
And you would have thought they were awake, though they were asleep. We turned them over, to the right and left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. Had you looked at them, you would have certainly fled away from them, filled with horror.
18:19
In the same miraculous way We woke them up from sleep so that they could question one another. One of them asked: “How long have you been here?” The others answered: “Maybe we have been here for a day or part of a day.” Finally they concluded: “Our Lord knows best how long we have stayed here. Anyhow let one of us go to the city with this silver coin, and let him find who has the purest food and bring us something to eat. Let him behave with caution and let him not disclose our whereabouts.
18:20
For, indeed, if they find out about you, they will stone you ˹to death˺, or turn you back to their religion, and in that case you will never be successful.”
18:21
In this way We brought them to people’s attention so that they might know that God’s promise [of resurrection] is true and that there is no doubt about the Last Hour, [though] people argue among themselves. [Some] said, ‘Construct a building over them: their Lord knows best about them.’ Those who had the say in their matter said, ‘We shall build a place of worship over them.’
Meaning:-
Resurrection: the rising of the dead on Judgment Day.
18:22
They will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog – guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muhammad], “My Lord knows best their ˹exact˺ number. Only a few people know as well.” So do not argue about them except with sure knowledge, and do not ask any of these people about them.
18:23
And never say of anything, “I will definitely do this tomorrow,”
18:24
Unless (you add to it) `Allah willing.´ And remember your Lord whenever you forget (and make a mistake) and say, `I hope my Lord will guide me and bring me ever closer than this to the right path (leading to success).
18:25
Some say they stayed in their cave three hundred years and some add another nine.
18:26
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Allah knows best how long they stayed. With Him ˹alone˺ is ˹the knowledge of˺ the unseen of the heavens and the earth. How perfectly He hears and sees! They have no guardian besides Him, and He does not let anyone share in His command.
18:27
Recite what has been revealed to you from the Book (the Quran) of your Lord: no one is authorized to change His Words and if you dare to make any change, you will find no refuge to protect you from Him.
Meaning:-
Refuge: Shelter, protection, safety, security, asylum.
18:28
And patiently stick with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure. Do not let your eyes look beyond them, desiring the luxuries of this worldly life. And do not obey those whose hearts We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follow ˹only˺ their desires and whose state is ˹total˺ loss.
Meaning:-
heedless: thoughtless, unthinking, imprudent, neglectful.
18:29
And say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “˹This is˺ the truth from your Lord. Whoever wills let them believe, and whoever wills let them disbelieve.” Surely We have prepared for the wrongdoers a Fire whose walls will ˹completely˺ surround them. When they cry for aid, they will be aided with water like moltene metal, which will burn ˹their˺ faces. What a horrible drink! And what a terrible place to rest!
Moltene: specially of materials with a high melting point, such as metal and glass) liquefied by heat.
18:30
As for those who believe and do good deeds, We certainly never deny the reward of those who are best in deeds.
18:31
They are the ones for whom there will be the Gardens of Eden, beneath which rivers flow; they will be adorned therein with bracelets of gold, they will wear green garments of fine silk and rich brocade and they will recline on soft couches. What an excellent reward and what a beautiful residence!
Meaning:-
adorn: make more beautiful or attractive.
brocade: a rich fabric, usually silk, woven with a raised pattern, typically with gold or silver thread.
18:32
Give them ˹O Prophet˺ an example of two men. To ˹the disbelieving˺ one We gave two gardens of grapevines, which We surrounded with palm trees and placed ˹various˺ crops in between.
18:33
Each of the two gardens produced its fruit and did not fall short thereof in anything. And We caused to gush forth within them a river.
Meaning:-
Gush: flood, rush, a rapid and plentiful stream or burst.
18:34
And he possessed much wealth; so he said to his companion, while he disputed with him: I have greater wealth than you, and am mightier in followers.
18:35
And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said: I do not think that this will ever perish
Meaning:-
Perish: to suffer destruction or ruin:, disappear
18:36
Nor do I believe that the Hour of Judgment will ever come. Even if I am returned to my Lord, I will surely find even a better place than this.”
18:37
His companion replied while still conversing with him: “Do you disbelieve in Him Who created you from dust, from a drop of semen, and fashioned you into a perfect man?
18:38
As for myself, Allah is the One Who is my Lord and I do not associate anyone with Him.
18:39
When you entered your garden why did you not say: `It is as Allah pleased, no one has power except Allah!’ Though you see me poorer than yourself in wealth and children,
18:40
perhaps my Lord will grant me ˹something˺ better than your garden, and send down upon your garden a thunderbolt from the sky, and it will become a smooth, dusty ground,
18:41
Or its waters should sink down into the ground so that you are unable to find it.
18:42
And so all his produce was ˹totally˺ ruined, so he started to wring his hands for all he had spent on it, while it had collapsed on its trellises. He cried, “Alas! I wish I had never associated anyone with my Lord ˹in worship˺!”
Meaning:-
Ruined: destroyed or spoiled, place has been very badly damaged
Wring: rub your hands together because of nervousness or anxiety.
Trellises: a framework of this kind used as a support for growing vines or plants.
Alas: an expression of grief, pity, or concern.
18:43
And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allah , nor could he defend himself.
18:44
There the authority is [completely] for Allah , the Truth. He is best in reward and best in outcome.
18:45
And put forward to them the example of the life of this world, it is like the water (rain) which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it, and becomes fresh and green. But (later) it becomes dry and broken pieces, which the winds scatter. And Allah is Able to do everything.
18:46
Likewise, wealth and children are an attraction of this worldly life. But the good righteous deeds (five compulsory prayers, deeds of Allah’s obedience, good and nice talk, remembrance of Allah with glorification, praises and thanks, etc.), that last, are better with your Lord for rewards and better in respect of hope.
Meaning:-
Glorification: praise and worship of God.
18:47
You should prepare for that Day when We will set the mountains in motion and you will see the earth as a barren waste; when We shall assemble mankind all together, leaving not even a single soul behind.
Meaning:-
Barren:not producing or incapable of producing offspring;
18:48
They all will be brought before your Lord standing in rows and Allah will say: “Well! You see that you have returned to Us as We created you at first: even though you claimed that We had not fixed any time for the fulfillment of this promise of meeting with Us!”
18:49
Then the book of their deeds will be placed before them. At that time you will see the sinners in great terror because of what is recorded therein. They will say: “Woe to us! What kind of a book is this? It leaves out nothing small or large: all is noted down!” They will find all that they did recorded therein. Your Lord will not be unjust to anyone in the least.
Meaning:-
Woe: great sorrow or distress.
18:50
When We said to the angels: “Prostrate yourself before Adam,” all prostrated themselves except Iblees (Shaitan), who was one of the Jinns and chose to disobey the command of his Lord. Would you then take him and his children as your protectors rather than Me, even though they are your enemies? What a bad substitute the wrongdoers have chosen!
Meaning:-
Prostrate: lying stretched out on the ground with one’s face downward, especially in reverence or submission.
Wrongdoer: a person who behaves illegally or dishonestly; an offender.
18:51
I (Allah) made them (Iblis and his offspring) not to witness (nor took their help in) the creation of the heavens and the earth and not (even) their own creation, nor was I (Allah) to take the misleaders as helpers.
Meaning:-
offspring: children, family.
18:52
On the Day of Judgement Allah will say to them: “Call on those whom you thought to be My partners.” They will call them but will receive no answer; and We shall cause animosity between them.
Meaning:-
animosity:bitterness, dislike, hate
18:53
The criminals will see the fire and realize that they are going to fall into it; but will find no place to escape.
18:54
We have given all kinds of examples in this Qur’an to make the people understand this Message, but man is exceedingly contentious.
Meaning:-
Exceedingly: extremely, exceptionally, especially, tremendously
Contentious: causing or likely to cause an argument; controversial.
18:55
Nothing can prevent men from believing and seeking the forgiveness of their Lord now that Guidance has come to them, unless they are waiting for the fate of former peoples to overtake them or the scourge to be brought to them face to face.
Meaning:-
Fate: destiny, providence, the stars, chance, luck, serendipity, fortune,
Scourge: a whip used as an instrument of punishment.
Former: came at an earlier time, prior or earlier.
18:56
We send the messengers only to Proclaim good news and to give warnings but with false arguments the unbelievers seek to defeat the Truth, through mocking at My revelations and My warnings.
Meaning:-
Proclaim: to announce or declare
false: incorrect, not true or accurate, wrong.
mocking: to attack or treat with ridicule, contempt, or derision, to ridicule by mimicry of action or speech; mimic derisively.
Revelations: revealed by God to humans, the Book of Revelations.
18:57
Who is more unjust than the one who, when reminded of the revelations of his Lord, turns away from them and forgets what his own hands have done? In regards to such people, We have cast veils over their hearts, so they do not understand this Qur’an, and have become hard of hearing. invite them as you may towards the guidance, they will never be ˹rightly˺ guided.
Meaning:-
Revelations:- revealed by God to humans, the Book of Revelations.
Veil: conceal, cover or hide.
18:58
Your Lord is Most Forgiving, the Lord of Mercy. Had it been His Will to seize them for their sins, He would have hastened their punishment, but for that there is an appointed time, after which they will not find any refuge.
18:59
And those cities – We destroyed them when they wronged, and We made for their destruction an appointed time.
18:60
Now tell them about the story of Khizr to whom Allah has given special knowledge. The Prophet Musa (Moses) was asked to go to him and learn from him. When Musa set out to meet him at an appointed place, he said to his young servant: “I will not give up my journey until I reach the junction of the two rivers, even if I have to spend ages in travel.”
18:61
It so happened that when at last they reached the junction of the two rivers they forgot about the fish they were carrying, which made its way into the river, and disappeared.
18:62
When they had passed further, he said to his assistant, “Bring us our meal! We have certainly been exhausted by today’s journey.”
18:63
He replied: “You know! I forgot to tell you about the fish, which made its way miraculously into the river, when we were resting beside that rock. It was Shaitan who made me forget to mention this incident to you.”
18:64
Musa said: “That is the place we were looking for,” so they went back retracing their footsteps.
18:65
There they found one of Our servants (Khizr) whom We had blessed with special favor from Ourselves and whom We had given special knowledge of Our own.
18:66
Musa requested of him: “May I follow you so that you may teach me from that True Knowledge which you have been taught?”
18:67
He said: Surely you cannot have patience with me
18:68
How could you be patient in matters beyond your knowledge?”
18:69
Musa said: “If Allah wills, you shall find me patient and I shall not disobey you in any way.”
18:70
He said: “If you want to follow me, then do not question me about anything until I tell you about it myself.”
18:71
So they set forth, but when they embarked in a boat to cross the river, Khizr made a hole in it. Musa cried out: “Did you make a hole in it to drown its passengers? You have certainly done a terrible thing!”
Meaning:-
Embark: go on board a ship.
18:72
He said: Did I not say that you will not be able to have patience with me?
18:73
Musa said: “Pardon my forgetfulness, do not be angry with me on account of this mistake.”
18:74
So they proceeded until they came across a boy, and Khizr killed him. [Moses] said, “You have killed an innocent person though he had killed nobody. Surely you have done a horrible thing!”
18:75
[Khizr] said, “Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?”
18:76
Moses replied, “If I ever question you about anything after this, then do not keep me in your company, for by then I would have given you enough of an excuse.”
18:77
They travelled on until they came to the people of a town. They asked them for some food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. There they found a wall ready to collapse, so Khizr restored it. [Moses] said, “If you wanted you could demand some payment for it!”
18:78
Khizr replied: “That’s it, this is the parting between you and me. But first I will explain to you those acts of mine which you could not bear to watch with patience.
18:79
“As for the ship, it belonged to some poor people, working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force.
18:80
“And as for the boy, his parents were ˹true˺ believers, and we feared that he would pressure them by transgression and disbelief.
Meaning:-
transgression: violation of a law, command, etc.; sin.
18:81
It was our wish that our Lord should grant them another in his place, a son more righteous and better in affection.
18:82
“And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city and beneath it their treasure was buried. Since their father was a righteous man, So your Lord willed that these children should attain their maturity and take out their treasure. All this was done as a mercy from your Lord. What I did was not done by my own will. That is the explanation of those actions which you could not bear to watch with patience”.
18:83
O Muhammad, they ask you about Zul-Qarnain. Say “I will recite to you some of his story”.
Meaning:-
Zul-Qarnain: This is the story of a righteous king who travelled far and wide. He is titled Ⱬul-Qarnain (lit., the man of the two horns) because of his journeys to the far east and far west (or the two horns/points of sunrise and sunset). Some believe Ⱬul-Qarnain was Alexander the Great, but this is not sound since Alexander the Great was a polytheist. Many scholars believe it was Abu Kuraib Al-Ḥamiri, a righteous king from Yemen.
18:84
Indeed We established his power in the land and We gave him all kinds of ways and means.
18:85
So he followed a course.
18:86
until he reached the setting ˹point˺ of the sun, which appeared to him to be setting in a spring of murky water, where he found some people. We said, “O Ⱬul-Qarnain! Either punish them or treat them kindly.”
Meaning:-
Murky Water: Murky water is dark or dirty, explosive diarrhea that leaves the toilet water dirty and cloudy.
18:87
He said, “As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment.
18:88
As for him who believes and does good deeds, he will have a good reward and will be assigned an easy task by our command”.
18:89
Then he travelled a ˹different˺ course
18:90
till he came to the rising of the Sun, he noted it rising on a people for whom We had not provided any shelter from it (they were so backward that they did not even know how to make houses or tents for their living).
18:91
He left them as they were: We had full knowledge what priority was before him.
18:92
Then he travelled a ˹third˺ course
18:93
till he reached between two mountains where he found a people who could hardly understand his language.
18:94
They requested, “O Ⱬul-Qarnain! Surely Gog and Magog 1 are spreading corruption throughout the land. Should we pay you tribute, provided that you build a wall between us and them?”
Meaning:-
Story of Yajooj and Majooj – The Gog and Magog
God created a nation called Ya’jooj and Ma’jooj. In the beginning they were free. King Zulqarnian imprisoned up behind a wall. They are still imprisoned today, and will be freed near the Day of Judgement. They will come out and create a lot of trouble. Their population is ten times larger than the world’s population.
18:95
Zul-Qarnain said: “That which my Lord has granted me is more than enough, just help me with worker-force and I will build a barrier between you and them.
18:96
Bring me blocks of iron; until when he had filled up the space between the two mountain sides, he said: Blow, until when he had made it (as) fire, he said: Bring me molten brass which I may pour over it.
Meaning:-
moltene: specially of materials with a high melting point, such as metal and glass) liquefied by heat.
18:97
So they [Ya’juj and Ma’juj (Gog and Magog)] were made powerless to scale it or dig through it.
Meaning:-

He said: “This is a blessing from my Lord. But you should know that when the promise of my Lord shall come to pass, He will level it to the ground, for the promise of my Lord is ever true.”
18:99
On that Day We shall let the people loose to surge like waves on one another. The trumpet will be blown and We shall assemble the mankind all together.
Meaning:-
Surge: a sudden powerful forward or upward movement, especially by a crowd or by a natural force such as the waves or tide.
18:100
And We will bring forth hell, exposed to view, on that day before the unbelievers.
18:101
(To) Those whose eyes had been under a covering from My Reminder (this Quran), and who could not bear to hear (it).
18:102
Do the unbelievers think that they can take my servants as protectors, to save themselves from Hell, instead of Me? Certainly We have prepared Hell for the entertainment of such unbelievers.
18:103
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Shall we inform you of who will lose the most deeds?
18:104
Those whose all efforts in this worldly life had gone astray from the Right Way, but all along they were under the delusion that they were doing good deeds;
Meaning:-
Astray: into error, away from the correct path or direction
delusion: illusion, misconception, misunderstanding, mistake, error.
18:105
Those are the ones who disbelieve in the verses of their Lord and in [their] meeting Him, so their deeds have become worthless; and We will not give their deeds any weight on Judgment Day.
18:106
That is their recompense – Hell – for what they denied and [because] they took My signs and My messengers in ridicule.
Meaning:-
Ridicule: to make fun of, to contemptuous and dismissive language or behavior.
18:107
However, those who believe and do good deeds, they will be entertained with the Gardens of Paradise
18:108
to live therein for ever and they will never desire to go anywhere else.
18:109
Say (O Muhammad to mankind). “If the sea were ink for (writing) the Words of my Lord, surely, the sea would be exhausted before the Words of my Lord would be finished, even if we brought (another sea) like it for its aid.”
18:110
O Muhammad, tell them: “I am but a human being like you; the revelation is sent to me to declare that your God is One God; therefore, whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do good deeds and join no other deity in the worship of his Lord.”
Meaning:-
deity: multiple gods and goddesses.
19:1
Kaf- Ha-Ya-‘Ain-Sad. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings].
19:2
˹This is˺ a reminder of your Lord’s mercy to His servant Zachariah,
Meaning:-
Zachariah: one of the prophets
19:3
When he called out his Lord (Allah) a call in secret,
19:4
saying: “O Lord! Surely my bones have weakened and the hair of my head glisten with grey, but I have never been disappointed in my prayer to You, my Lord!
Meaning:-
Glisten: a sparkling light reflected from something wet.
19:5
And I am concerned about ˹the faith of˺ my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So grant me, by Your grace, an heir,
Meaning:-
Barren: not producing or incapable of producing offspring —used especially of females.
Heir: An heir is someone who has the right to inherit a person’s title when that person dies.
19:6
“Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya’qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!”.
Meaning:-
Inherit: succeed to, take over, to receive qualities.
19:7
We answered his prayer saying: “O Zakariya! Surely We give you the good news of a son, his name shall be Yahya (John): a name that no one has had before him”.
Meaning:-
Zakariya: one of the prophets
19:8
He said: “My Lord! How can I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I have reached the extreme old age.”
Meaning:-
Barren: not producing or incapable of producing offspring; sterile:
19:9
The answer came: “So shall it be. Your Lord says: ‘It shall not be a difficult task for Me, just as I created you before, when you were nothing at all!”
19:10
Zakariya said “O my Lord! Give me a Sign”. He said: “Your sign is that for three nights you shall not be able to speak to the people even being sound in health”.
Meaning:-
Zakariya: one of the prophets
19:11
Then he came out to his people from Al-Mihrab (a praying place or a private room, etc.), he told them by signs to glorify Allah’s Praises in the morning and in the afternoon.
19:12
(It was said to his son): “O Yahya (John)! Hold fast the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)].” And We gave him wisdom while yet a child.
19:13
And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allah
19:14
And dutiful towards his parents, and he was neither an arrogant nor disobedient (to Allah or to his parents).
19:15
So Peace on him the day he was born the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)!
19:16
O Muhammad, relate to them the story of Maryam in the Book (The Qur’an) when she withdrew from her family to a place facing east.
19:17
She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them; then We sent to her Our Ruh [angel Jibrael (Gabriel)], and he appeared before her in the form of a man in all respects.
19:18
She said: “I seek Rahman’s (Allah’s) protection against you, leave me alone if you are Godfearing”.
19:19
(The angel) said: “I am only a Messenger from your Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a holy son.”
19:20
She said: “How shall I bear a son, no man has ever touched me nor am I unchaste?”
Meaning:-
Unchaste: relating to or engaging in sexual activity, especially of an illicit or extramarital nature.
19:21
The angel replied: “So shall it be – Your Lord says: `It is easy for Me. We wish to make him a Sign for mankind and a blessing from Us’ – and this matter has already been decreed“.
Meaning:-
Decree: order, command.
19:22
So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place (i.e. Bethlehem valley about 4-6 miles from Jerusalem).
19:23
The pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree. She cried in her anguish: “Ah! Would that I had died before this, and been long forgotten!”
Meaning:-
Anguish: severe mental or physical pain or suffering
19:24
An angel from beneath the palm-tree consoled her, saying: “Do not grieve! Your Lord has provided a brook at your feet.
Meaning:-
Console: comfort (someone) at a time of grief or disappointment.
Brook: a small, natural stream of fresh water.
19:25
“And shake the trunk of date-palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe-dates upon you.
19:26
So eat and drink, and put your heart at ease. But if you see any of the people, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to (Allah) Most Gracious, and this day will I enter into not talk with any human being'”
19:27
Then she returned to her people, carrying him. They said ˹in shock˺, “O Mary! You have certainly done a horrible thing!
19:28
O sister of Aaron! Your father was not an indecent man, nor was your mother unchaste.”
Meaning:-
Unchaste: relating to or engaging in sexual activity, especially of an illicit or extramarital nature.
19:29
So she pointed to the baby. They said, “How can we talk to someone who is an infant in the cradle?”
19:30
[Jesus] said, “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah . He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.
19:31
And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah (charity) as long as I remain alive
19:32
“And dutiful to my mother, and made me not arrogant, unblest.
19:33
Peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I shall die and the Day I shall be raised to life again”.
19:34
Such is ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). (it is) a statement of truth, about which they doubt (or dispute).
19:35
It befits not (the Majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son [this refers to the slander of Christians against Allah, by saying that ‘Iesa (Jesus) is the son of Allah]. Glorified (and Exalted be He above all that they associate with Him). When He decrees a thing, He only says to it, “Be!” and it is.
Meaning:-
Beget: To produce (children) by sexual reproduction.
Slander: the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging a reputation.
19:36
[Jesus said], “And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path.”
Meaning:-
Path: a way, a course of action, conduct, or procedure:
19:37
Then the sects differed [i.e. the Christians about ‘Iesa (Jesus) ], so woe unto the disbelievers [those who gave false witness by saying that ‘Iesa (Jesus) is the son of Allah] from the meeting of a great Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection, when they will be thrown in the blazing Fire).
Meaning:-
sect: a group of people with somewhat different religious beliefs.
Blazing: burn fiercely or brightly.
19:38
They will be able to see and hear very clearly on that Day when they will appear before Us! But today these wrongdoers, neither want to hear nor see the Truth and, are in manifest error.
Meaning:-
Wrongdoer: a person who behaves illegally or dishonestly; an offender.
Manifest: to make clear or evident to the eye or the understanding; show plainly
19:39
And warn them, [O Muhammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded; and [yet], they are in [a state of] heedlessness, and they do not believe.
19:40
Indeed, it is We Who will succeed the earth and whoever is on it. And to Us they will ˹all˺ be returned.
19:41
And mention in the Book (the Quran) Ibrahim (Abraham). Verily! He was a man of truth, a Prophet.
19:42
Remember when he said to his father: “O my father! Why do you worship something that can neither hear nor see, nor yet profit you in any way?
19:43
O my father! I have been given some knowledge which has not come to you, so follow me: I’ll guide you to the Right Way.
19:44
O my father! Do not worship Shaitan: for Shaitan is disobedient to the Compassionate (Allah).
Meaning:-
Compassionate: feeling or showing sympathy and concern for others.
19:45
O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hellfire].”
19:46
He (the father) said: “Do you reject my gods, O Ibrahim (Abraham)? If you stop not (this), I will indeed stone you. So get away from me safely before I punish you.”
19:47
Ibrahim (Abraham) said: “Peace be on you! I will ask Forgiveness of my Lord for you. He has truly been Most Gracious to me.
19:48
I am leaving you and those whom you invoke besides Allah: I will call upon my Lord and I am sure my prayers to my Lord will not be ignored”.
Meaning:-
Invoke: to call on (a deity), as in prayer. {Deity: God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess, Fake God.}
19:49
So after he had left them and what they worshipped besides Allah, We gave him Ishaque (Isaac) and Ya’qub (Jacob), and each one of them We made a Prophet.
19:50
And We gave them of Our Mercy (a good provision in plenty), and We granted them honour on the tongues (of all the nations, i.e everybody remembers them with a good praise).
19:51
And mention in the Book (this Quran) Musa (Moses). Verily! He was chosen and he was a Messenger (and) a Prophet.
19:52
We called him from the right side of Mount Ṭûr, and drew him near, speaking ˹with him˺ directly.
19:53
And We bestowed on him his brother Harun (Aaron), (also) a Prophet, out of Our Mercy.
Meaning:-
Bestowed:: to present as a gift, an honor
19:54
And mention in the Book (the Quran) Isma’il (Ishmael). Verily! He was true to what he promised, and he was a Messenger, (and) a Prophet.
19:55
He used to urge his people to pray and give alms-tax. And his Lord was well pleased with him
19:56
And mention in the Book (the Quran) Idris (Enoch).Verily! He was a man of truth, (and) a Prophet.
19:57
And We raised him high in Heaven.
19:58
Those were ˹some of˺ the prophets who Allah has blessed from among the descendants of Adam, and of those We carried with Noah ˹in the Ark˺, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those We ˹rightly˺ guided and chose. Whenever the revelations of the Most Compassionate were recited to them, they fell down, prostrate and weeping.
Meaning:-
Descendants: a person that is descended from a specific ancestor; an offspring.
Ark: a large wooden ship built by Noah
Compassionate: feeling or showing sympathy and concern for others.
Prostrate: lying stretched out on the ground with one’s face downward, especially in reverence or submission.
weeping: Shedding tears; tearful, to cry.
19:59
But they were succeeded by generations who neglected prayer and followed their lusts and so will soon face the evil consequences.
Meaning:-
lusts: a very powerful feeling of wanting something, to have a strong desire for something
Consequences: a result or effect of an action or condition.
19:60
However, those who repent, become believers and do good deeds, will be admitted to Paradise and will not be wronged in the least.
19:61
They will be granted the Gardens of Eden which the Merciful has promised to His servants, even though they have not seen them, and His promise shall be fulfilled.
19:62
There they will hear no nonsense (dirty, false, evil vain talk), but only the words of peace; and they will be provided their sustenance day and night.
Meaning:-
Sustenance: support, maintenance, food, nourishment, being supplied with the necessaries of life.
19:63
This is the garden which We cause those of Our servants to inherit who guard (against evil).
Meaning:-
Inherit: succeed to, take over, to receive qualities.
19:64
[Gabriel said], “And we [angels] descend not except by the order of your Lord. To Him belongs that before us and that behind us and what is in between. And your Lord is never forgetful.
Meaning:-
Descend: to come or go down from a higher place.
19:65
He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and of all that lies in between, So worship Him ˹alone˺, and be steadfast in His worship. Do you know of anyone equal to Him ˹in His attributes˺?”
Meaning:-
Steadfast: loyal, faithful, committed, devoted, dedicated, dependable, reliable.
Attributes: associate with, any of the essential qualifications of God.
19:66
Yet ˹some˺ people ask ˹mockingly˺, “After I die, will I really be raised to life again?”
Meaning:-
mockingly: in a way that makes fun of someone, in a disrespectful jeering manner.
19:67
Do ˹such˺ people not remember that We created them before, when they were nothing?
19:68
By your Lord ˹O Prophet˺! [on Judgment Day] We will surely gather them along with the devils (Shayatin), and then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees.
19:69
Then indeed We shall drag out from every sect all those who were worst in obstinate rebellion against the Most Beneficent (Allah).
Meaning:-
sect: a group of people with somewhat different religious beliefs.
Obstinate: stubborn, unyielding, inflexible, unbending,
Rebellion: disobedience, an act of violent , resistance to or defiance of any authority, control, or tradition.
19:70
Certainly We know best who deserves most to be burned therein.
19:71
There is none of you who will not pass over it. ˹This is˺ a decree your Lord must fulfil.
Meaning:-
Decree: order that something must happen.
19:72
Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.
Meaning:-
Wrongdoer: a person who behaves illegally or dishonestly; an offender.
19:73
When Our clear revelations are recited to them, the disbelievers ask the believers ˹mockingly˺, “Which of the two of us is better in status and superior in assembly?”
Meaning:-
Mockingly: in a way that makes fun of someone, in a disrespectful jeering manner.
Assembly: a group of people gathered together in one place for a common purpose.
19:74
Don’t they see, how many generations (past nations) have We destroyed before them, who were far greater in possessions and in splendor?
Meaning:-
Possessions: the state of having, owning, or controlling something, wealth, goods. something that belongs to you, material or landed property.
Splendor: brilliant or gorgeous appearance, richness or glory, magnificent and splendid appearance; grandeur.
19:75
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Whoever is in error – the Most Compassionate will allow them plenty of time, until, when they are confronted with what they have been warned about- either the punishment [in this life] or the Hour [of Judgement]- they realize who is worse situated and who has the weakest forces.’
Meaning:-
Confronted: To come face to face with, especially with defiance or hostility, to face especially in challenge.
[This is the answer for the Verse No.19:73]
19:76
In fact, Allah increases in guidance those who seek guidance; everlasting are only the good deeds, which are the best in the sight of your Lord to earn you a better reward and yield far better returns.
19:77
Then, have you seen he who disbelieved in Our verses and said, “I will definitely be granted ˹plenty of˺ wealth and children ˹if there is an afterlife˺.”?
19:78
Has he gained knowledge of the unseen, or did he receive a promise from the Most Merciful?
19:79
By no means! We write down what he says and We will make his punishment long and terrible.
19:80
We will inherit all that he boasts of, and he will come back to Us all alone leaving all these things behind.
Meaning:-
Inherit: to take or hold a possession
Boasts: talk proudly, to speak of or assert with excessive pride.
19:81
They have taken other gods for worship besides Allah, seeking strength ˹and protection˺ through them.
19:82
No! Those “gods” will deny their worship of them and will be against them opponents [on the Day of Judgement].
19:83
Don’t you see that We have sent down to the unbelievers shaitans (devils) who incite them against the Truth?
Meaning:-
Incite: encourage or stir up (violent or unlawful behavior). urge or persuade (someone) to act in a violent or unlawful way, make people do violent or criminal things
19:84
So make no haste against them; We only count out to them a (limited) number (of the days of the life of this world and delay their term so that they may increase in evil and sins).
19:85
The day on which We will gather those who guard (against evil) to the Beneficent Allah to receive honors
19:86
And will drive the criminals to Hell in thirst
19:87
The Day will surely come when We will gather the righteous like honored guests before the Compassionate (Allah),
Meaning:-
Compassionate: feeling or showing sympathy and concern for others.
19:88
Those who say: “The Compassionate (Allah) has begotten a son,
Meaning:-
Compassionate: feeling or showing sympathy and concern for others.
Beget (past participle: begotten) : To produce (children) by sexual reproduction.
19:89
You have done an atrocious thing.
Meaning:-
Atrocious: appalling, dreadful, terrible, very bad, unpleasant, miserable
19:90
that the very Heavens might crack, the earth might cleave asunder and the mountains might crumble to pieces
Meaning:-
Cleave: split or sever (something), especially along a natural line or grain
asunder:into pieces.
19:91
That they attribute to the Most Merciful a son.
Meaning:-
attribute: associate with, any of the essential qualifications of God,
19:92
But it is not suitable for (the Majesty of) the Most Beneficent (Allah) that He should beget a son (or offspring or children).
Meaning:-
Beget: To produce (children) by sexual reproduction.
19:93
There is none in the heavens or the earth who will not return to the Most Compassionate in full submission.
19:94
He has a comprehensive knowledge and has kept strict count of all His creatures,
Meaning:-
Comprehensive: complete; including all or nearly all elements or aspects of something.
Strict: demanding total obedience or observance
