That is because Allah ˹alone˺ is the Truth, He ˹alone˺ gives life to the dead, and it is He ˹alone˺ Who has power over all things.

And verily the Hour will come: there can be no doubt about it, or about (the fact) that Allah will raise up all who are in the graves.
22:8
˹Still˺ there are some who dispute about Allah without knowledge, guidance, or an enlightening scripture [from Him],
22:9
twisting things around in order to lead others astray from the Path of Allah – for such persons there is disgrace in this life, and on the Day of Judgment we shall make them taste the punishment of burning fire,
22:10
˹They will be told,˺ “This is ˹the reward˺ for what your hands have done. And Allah is never unjust to ˹His˺ servants.”
22:11
There are some people who worship Allah standing on the verge of faith (half faith and half disbelief). When such a person is blessed with good fortune he is content; but if they are afflicted with a trial, he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts back to disbelief). He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is ˹truly˺ the clearest loss.
Meaning:-
Verge: an edge or border.
Content: in a state of peaceful happiness.
Afflicted: to cause suffering, pain, illness, disaster, trouble greatly or grievously
22:12
Then instead of Allah, he starts calling those deities who can neither harm nor help him. That is what is the extreme error.
Meaning:-
Deities: Fake Gods, God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess.
22:13
They invoke those whose worship leads to harm, not benefit. What an evil master and what an evil friend he chooses for help!
Meaning:-
Invoke: to call on (a deity), as in prayer. {Deity: Fake God, God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess.}
22:14
As for those who believe and do good deeds, Allah will admit them to gardens beneath which the rivers flow. Surely Allah does what He wants.
22:15
Whoever thinks that Allah will not help His Prophet in this world and the Hereafter – let him extend a rope to the ceiling, then cut off [his breath], and let him see: will his effort remove that which enrages [him]?
Meaning:-
Enrage: to make extremely angry
22:16
Thus have We revealed this The Qur’an in clear verses; and verily Allah gives guidance to whom He wants.
22:17
Those who believe (in the Qur’an), those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Sabians, Christians, Magians, and Polytheists,- Allah will judge between them on the Day of Judgment: for Allah is witness of all things.
22:18
Do you not see that to Allah bow down ˹in submission˺ all those in the heavens and all those on the earth, as well as the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the animals (creatures), and ˹all˺ living beings, as well as many humans, while many are deserving of punishment. And whoever Allah disgraces, none can honour. Surely Allah does what He wills.
22:19
These are two opposing groups (the believers and disbelievers) that disagree about their Lord: as for the disbelievers, garments of Fire will be cut out for them and boiling water will be poured over their heads,
22:20
which will not only melt their skins but also the inner parts of their bellies,
22:21
In addition there will be maces of iron to lash (to punish) them.
Meaning:-
Maces: spiked metal head. A heavy medieval war club with a spiked.
lash: strike (someone) with a whip or stick, whip, flog, flagellate, beat
22:22
Every time they want to get out of Hellfire from anguish, they will be returned to it, and [it will be said], “Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!”
Meaning:-
Anguish: severe mental or physical pain or suffering.
22:23
As for those who have faith and do good deeds, Allah will certainly admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow. They shall be decked with pearls and bracelets of gold, and their garments will be of silk.
Meaning:-
Deck: decorate or adorn brightly or festively.
22:24
This is because during their life on earth, they were guided to accept the pure words of Allah and they were shown the Way of the All-Praiseworthy.
22:25
Indeed, those who have disbelieved and avert [people] from the way of Allah and [from] al-Masjid al-Haram, to which We have assigned all mankind with equal rights whether they are natives or foreigners, and whoever intend to deviate from righteousness to wrongdoing in its vicinity, We will make him taste a painful punishment

Avert: turn away or aside.
Deviate: going aside from a path, especially in a way that causes problems for others.
22:26
And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the place of the House, [saying], “Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate.
Meaning:-
Prostrate: lying stretched out on the ground with one’s face downward, especially in reverence or submission.
22:27
And proclaim to mankind the Hajj (pilgrimage). They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they will come from every deep and distant (wide) mountain highway (to perform Hajj).
Meaning:-
proclaim: to announce or declare, to declare publicly.
22:28
That they may witness the benefits (provided) for them and mention the name of Allah through the Days appointed over the cattle which He has provided for them (for sacrifice). So eat from their meat and feed the desperately poor.
22:29
Then they should accomplish their needful acts of shaving or cutting their hair and taking a bath, fulfill their vows and (again) circumambulate the Ancient House.” (the Ka’bah at Makkah).
Meaning:-
Circumambulate: to walk or go about or around, to circle on foot especially ritualistically.
22:30
That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the rituals of Allah – it is best for him in the sight of his Lord. The ˹meat of˺ cattle has been made lawful for you, except what is recited to you. So avoid the uncleanliness of idols and avoid false statement,
Meaning:-
Rituals: a religious service or other ceremony which involves a series of actions performed in a fixed order.
Idols: an image or representation of a god used as an object of worship, Fake Gods.
22:31
Being true in faith to Allah, associating none with Him ˹in worship˺. For whoever associates ˹others˺ with Allah is like someone who has fallen from the sky and is either snatched away by birds or swept by the wind to a remote place.
Meaning:-
Associates: partners, nearly equal status, to join as a companion.
22:32
Thus it is [what has been mentioned in the above said Verses (27, 28, 29, 30, 31) is an obligation that mankind owes to Allah]. And whosoever honours the Symbols of Allah, then it is truly from the piety of the heart.
Meaning:-
Piety: a strong belief in God or a religion, shown by your worship and behavior.
22:33
You may benefit (by using their milk) from the cattle dedicated for sacrifice, until the time of their slaughter, then their place of sacrifice is near the Ancient House (the Haram – sacred territory of Makkah city).
Meaning:-
Slaughter: butchering of cattle, sheep, etc.
Sacrifice: an act of slaughtering an animal, the offering of animal.
22:34
For every nation We prescribed a way of sacrifice so that they may mention the name of Allah over the cattle which He has given them for food, but the object is one and the same: to remember that your God is one God; so submit yourselves to Him as a Muslim, and O Prophet, give good news to the humble,
22:35
To those whose hearts when Allah is mentioned, are filled with fear, and the patient of whatever may befall them, and those who establish prayer and who spend (in charity) of that We have bestowed on them.
Meaning:-
Bestowed: an honor, right, an honor, to present as a gift.
22:36
We have made sacrificial camels ˹and cattle˺ among the symbols of Allah, in which there is ˹much˺ good for you. So mention the Name of Allah over them when they are lined up ˹for sacrifice˺. Once they have fallen ˹lifeless˺ on their sides, you may eat from their meat, and feed the needy—those who do not beg, and those who do. In this way We have subjected these ˹animals˺ to you so that you may be grateful.
22:37
It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches Him. Thus, He has subjected these animals to you so that you may glorify Allah for giving you guidance, and O Prophet, give good news to those who do good to others.
Meaning:-
Piety: a strong belief in God or a religion, shown by your worship and behavior.
22:38
Surely Allah will defend those who believe; surely Allah does not love any one who is unfaithful, ungrateful.
22:39
Permission ˹to fight back˺ is ˹hereby˺ granted to those being fought, for they have been wronged. And Allah is truly Most Capable of helping them ˹prevail˺.
Meaning:-
Prevail: Prove more powerful than opposing forces; be victorious.
22:40
Those who have been expelled from their homes unjustly only because they said: “Our Lord is Allah.” – Had Allah not repelled ˹the aggression of˺ some people by means of others, destruction would have surely claimed monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which Allah’s Name is often mentioned. Allah will certainly help those who stand up for Him. Allah is truly All-Powerful, Almighty.
Meaning:-
Expel:force (someone) to leave a place.
Repelled: drive or force (an attack or attacker) back or away.
Aggression: a forceful action, often harmful, attack.
Monastery:a house or place of residence occupied by a community of persons,especially monks, living in seclusion under religious vows.
Synagogue:a Jewish house of worship, often having facilities for religious instruction
22:41
These are the people who, if We establish them in the land, will establish regular prayer and give regular charity, enjoin justice and forbid evil; the final decision of all affairs is in the hands of Allah.
22:42
And if they deny you, [O Muhammad] – so, before them, did the people of Noah and ‘Aad and Thamud deny [their prophets],
22:43
And the people of Abraham and the people of Lot
22:44
as well as the residents of Madyan had denied their Prophets, likewise Musa (Moses) was also denied. Initially, I gave respite to all those unbelievers and then I seized them: see how (terrible) was my rejection (of them)!
Meaning:-
Respite: to grant delay in the carrying out of (a punishment, obligation, etc.).
22:45
And how many a city did We destroy while it was committing wrong – so it is [now] fallen into ruin – and [how many] an abandoned well and [how many] a lofty palace.
Meaning:-
Ruin: to severely harm, damage, to destroy or spoil.
Abandoned: having been deserted or cast off.
Lofty: building or structure: very tall, of imposing height; towering.
22:46
Have they not travelled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind.
22:47
And they urge you ˹O Prophet˺ to hasten the punishment. But Allah will never fail in His promise. But a day with your Lord is indeed like a thousand years by your counting.
22:48
And for how many a city did I prolong enjoyment while it was committing wrong. Then I seized it, and to Me is the [final] destination.
22:49
Say (O Muhammad): “O mankind! I am (sent) to you only as a plain warner.”
22:50
Those who accept the true faith and do good deeds shall be forgiven and provided honorable provision;
22:51
But those who strive against Our verses, [seeking] to cause failure – those are the companions of Hellfire.
22:52
Whenever We sent a messenger or a prophet before you ˹O Muhammad˺ and he recited ˹Our revelations˺, Satan (devil) would influence ˹people’s understanding [some misunderstanding] of˺ his recitation. But ˹eventually˺ Allah would eliminate Satan’s (devil) influence. Then Allah would ˹firmly˺ establish His revelations. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Meaning:-
Revelations: revealed by God to humans. (Quran)
Influence: control or manipulate something.
Recitation: a formal reading of verse.
Eliminate: to remove it completely.
22:53
All that so He may make Satan’s (devil) influence a trial for those ˹hypocrites˺ whose hearts are sick and those ˹disbelievers˺ whose hearts are hardened, and, surely, the wrongdoers are far gone in error, (from the Truth):
Meaning:-
Hypocrites: a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess.
Wrongdoers: especially a sinner, or transgressor, criminal, dishonestly; an offender.
22:54
And that those who have been given knowledge may know that it (this Quran) is the truth from your Lord, and that they may believe therein, and their hearts may submit to it with humility. And verily, Allah is the Guide of those who believe, to the Straight Path.
22:55
Yet the disbelievers will persist in doubt about this ˹Quran˺ until the Hour takes them by surprise, or there comes to them the punishment of the Day after which there will be no night (when every hope would turn into despair, and after which there will be no night to rest in).
Meaning:-
Persist: continue firmly, carry on, keep on, remain.
Despair: the complete loss or absence of hope.
22:56
On that Day the Kingdom will be that of Allah’s; He will judge between them; so those who have embraced the true faith and done good deeds shall enter the gardens of delight;
22:57
But those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations ˹Quran˺, it is they who will suffer a humiliating punishment (in Hell).
Meaning:-
Humiliating: to make someone feel ashamed or lose respect for himself or herself.
22:58
Those who leave their homes and belongings in the cause of Allah, and are then killed or died, surely, Allah will provide a good provision for them. And verily, it is Allah Who indeed is the Best of those who make provision.
22:59
He will certainly admit them into a place they will be pleased with. For Allah is truly All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.
22:60
That [is so]. And whoever responds [to injustice] with the equivalent of that with which he was harmed and then is tyrannized – Allah will certainly help them. Surely Allah is Ever-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.
Meaning:-
Tyrannized: to exercise absolute power or control, especially cruelly or oppressively.
22:61
That is because Allah causes the night to merge into the day, and the day into the night. Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
22:62
That is because Allah ˹alone˺ is the Truth and what they invoke besides Him is falsehood, and Allah ˹alone˺ is truly the Most High, All-Great.
Meaning:-
Invoke: to call on (a deity), as in prayer. {Deity: God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess, Fake God.}or or supplication.
Falsehood: a false statement; lie.
22:63
Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky, then the earth becomes green? Surely Allah is Most Subtle, All-Aware.
Meaning:-
Subtle: having or marked by keen insight and ability to penetrate deeply and thoroughly.
22:64
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Allah ˹alone˺ is truly the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.
22:65
Do you not see that Allah has subjected to you (mankind) whatever is in the earth as well as the ships ˹that˺ sail through the sea by His command? He keeps the sky from falling down on the earth except by His permission. Surely Allah is Ever Gracious and Most Merciful to humanity.
22:66
It is He, Who gave you life, and then will cause you to die, and will again give you life (on the Day of Resurrection). ˹But˺ surely humankind is ever ungrateful.
22:67
For every nation We have ordained religious ceremonies [e.g. slaughtering of the beast of cattle during the three days of stay at Mina (Makkah) during the Hajj (pilgrimage)] which they must follow; so let them (pagans) not dispute with you on the matter (i.e. to eat of the cattle which you slaughter, and not to eat of cattle which Allah kills by its natural death), but invite them to your Lord. Verily! You (O Muhammad) indeed are on the (true) straight guidance. (i.e. the true religion of Islamic Monotheism).
Meaning:-
Slaughter: the killing or butchering of cattle, sheep, etc., especially for food.
Pagans: is a person who worships many gods or who worships nature and the Earth, a follower of a polytheistic
Monotheism: the doctrine or belief that there is only one God.
22:68
If they argue with you, say: “Allah knows best all that you do.”
22:69
Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection concerning the matters in which you differ.
Meaning:-
Differ: disagree, to be unlike, To be of a different opinion; disagree.
22:70
Do you not know that Allah is aware of all that is in heaven and the earth? Certainly all of this is recorded in a Book and it is very easy for Allah to do so.
22:71
Yet they worship, besides Allah, things for which no authority has been sent down to them, and of which they have (really) no knowledge: for those that do wrong there is no helper.
22:72
When Our revelations (verses) are recited to them with all their clarity, you ˹O Prophet˺ can notice a denial on the faces of the disbelievers. They nearly attack with violence those who rehearse Our revelations (verses) to them. Say to them: “Shall I tell you something which is far worse than that? It is the fire of hell, which Allah has promised to those who reject the truth; What an evil destination!”
Meaning:-
Rehearse: to say, to recite aloud in a formal manner.
22:73
O mankind! Here is an example for your understanding, so listen to it carefully. Those deities whom you call besides Allah, cannot create a single fly, even if they all combined their forces, rather, if a fly snatches away anything from them they cannot even get it back; How powerless are those who invoke and those invoked!
Meaning:-
Deities: Fake God, God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess, rank of a god.
Invoke: to call on (a deity), as in prayer. {Deity: Fake God, God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess.}
22:74
They have not estimated Allah His Rightful Estimate; Verily, Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty.
22:75
Allah chooses His messengers from among the angels and from among the human beings, for surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
22:76
He knows what is before them, and what is behind them. And to Allah return all matters (for decision).
22:77
O you who believe! Bow down, and prostrate yourselves, and worship your Lord and do good that you may be successful.
Meaning:-
Prostrate: lying stretched out on the ground with one’s face downward, especially in reverence or submission.
22:78
Strive for ˹the cause of˺ Allah in the way He deserves, for ˹it is˺ He ˹Who˺ has chosen you, and laid upon you no hardship in the religion—the way of your forefather Abraham. ˹It is Allah˺ Who named you ‘Muslims ’ ˹in the˺ earlier ˹Scriptures˺ and in this ˹Quran˺, so that the Messenger may be a witness over you, and that you may be witnesses over humanity. So establish prayer, give regular Charity, and hold fast to Allah. He ˹alone˺ is your Guardian. What an excellent Guardian, and what an excellent Helper!
23:1
Successful indeed are the believers,
23:2
those who humble themselves in prayer;
Meaning:-
Humble: not arrogant, a humble person is not proud and does not believe that they are better than other people.
23:3
who avoid vain talk,
Meaning:-
Vain: producing no result; useless.
23:4
Who are active in deeds of charity;
23:5
And they who guard their private parts
23:6
except with their spouses (wives) or those who are legally in their possession, for in that case they shall not be blamed
23:7
– however those who seek to go beyond that in lust are the ones who shall be the transgressors
Meaning:-
Lust: illicit sexual desire
transgression: violation of a law, command, etc.; sin.
23:8
-And those who fulfil their trusts and keep their promises;
23:9
And they who carefully maintain their prayers –
23:10
These are the ones who will be awarded
23:10
These are the ones who will be awarded
23:11
Who will own Paradise; and live therein forever.
23:12
Indeed We created humankind from a chosen clay.
Meaning:-
Clay: earth; mud.
23:13
Then We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a place of rest, firmly fixed;
23:14
then changed the semen into a leechlike mass, then leechlike mass into a fetus lump, then fetus lump into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought him forth as quite a different creature from the embryo – so blessed is Allah, the best of all creators.
Meaning:
leechlike mass: semen into a leechlike mass, then leechlike mass into a fetus lump, then fetus.
Fetus: an unborn offspring of a mammal, in particular an unborn human baby more than eight weeks after conception.
Embryo: an unborn or unhatched offspring in the process of development, in particular a human offspring during the period from approximately the second to the eighth week after fertilization (after which it is usually termed a fetus).
23:15
Then after living for a while you shall all die,
23:16
then most surely you shall be raised to life again on the Day of Resurrection.
23:17
And We have created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creation unaware.
23:18
We send down rain from the sky in perfect measure, causing it to soak into the earth. And We are surely able to take it away.
23:19
– then with it We cause to grow gardens of palm trees and grapes for you, in which there are abundant fruits, and from which you may eat,
Meaning:-
Abundant: present in great quantity; more than adequate; over sufficient:
23:20
and also a tree which grows on Mount Sinai which produces oil and relish as a food for those who like to eat it.
Meaning:-
Mount Sinai: is a mountain in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. This was the Mountain on which the Law was given to Moses, and the glory of Allah was made visible.
23:21
In cattle, too, there is a lesson for you: from within their bodies We produce milk for you to drink, besides this you gain numerous other benefits; some of them you eat,
23:22
And on them (on land) and on the ships (in the sea) you are carried.
23:23
And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, and he said, “O my people, worship Allah ; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?”
Meaning:-
Deity: God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess, Fake God.
23:24
The chiefs of the unbelievers among his people said, “Nuh is but a human like you, he desires to assert his superiority over you. If Allah wanted to send messengers, He could have sent down angels, we have never heard such a thing as he says from our forefathers.”
23:25
Some of them said: “He is just a madman, so bear with him for a while.”
23:26
Nuh said, “O my Lord! Help me against their calling me a liar.”
23:27
So We revealed Our will to him, saying: “Build an ark under our supervision according to Our instructions; and when Our judgement comes to pass and water wells overflows from ‘At-Tannur‘, put into the ship from each [creature] two mates (a male and a female) and your family, except those of them against whom the judgement has already been passed; and do not plead with Me in favor of the wrongdoers, for they are doomed to be drowned in the flood.
Meaning:-
Tannur: oven (Noah was given a signal that once the water gushes out of a particular oven then the Flood is about to begin. It can also be translated as: “The fountains of the earth gushed forth.”)
Plead: make an emotional appeal, you ask them in an intense, emotional way to do it.
Wrongdoers: especially a sinner, or transgressor, criminal, dishonestly; an offender.
Doomed: certain to fail, die, or be destroyed.
23:28
And when you have boarded the ship, you and those with you, then say, ‘Praise to Allah who has saved us form the wrongdoing people.’
23:29
And say: “My Lord! Cause me to land at a blessed landing-place, for You are the best accommodator.”
23:30
There are many lessons in this story, and surely We do test people.
23:31
Then We raised up after them another generation.
23:32
And We sent among them a messenger (Hud) from themselves, [saying], “Worship Allah ; you have no deity other than Him; then will you not fear Him?”
Meaning:-
Deity: Fake God, God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess.
23:33
But the chiefs of his people – who disbelieved the message and denied the life in the hereafter, – on whom We had bestowed affluence in this worldly life, said: “This person is but a human like you; he eats of what you eat and drinks of what you drink.
Meaning:-
Bestow:an honor, right, or gift
Affluence: abundance of money, property, and other material goods; riches; wealth.
23:34
And if you ˹ever˺ obey a human like yourselves, then you would certainly be losers.
23:35
What! Does he claim that when you are dead and turned into dust and bones, you will be brought to life out of your graves?
23:36
Impossible! Just impossible is that with which you are being threatened with!
23:37
There is no other life but our life of this world: we live here and die here, and shall never be raised to life again.
23:38
He is not but a man who has invented a lie about Allah , and we will not believe him.”
23:39
He said: O my Lord! help me against their calling me a liar.
23:40
Allah responded: “After a short time they will surely be sorry.”
23:41
Then the ˹mighty˺ Blast overtook them with justice, and We made them as rubbish of dead leaves (floating on the stream of Time)! So away with the people who do wrong!
Meaning:-
Rubbish: worthless, unwanted material that is rejected or thrown out; debris; litter; trash.
Stream of Time: (Stream Meaning: a small, narrow river) Streams flow only one way. Time moves only forward. · Streams flow constantly. Time never stops.
23:42
After them We raised other generations
23:43
No people can hasten their term, nor can they delay (it).
23:44
– and sent forth Our Messengers one after another: every time a Messenger came to his people, they disbelieved him, so We punished them one by one and made them a history; so gone is the nation of disbelievers.
23:45
Then We sent Musa (Moses) and his brother Haroon (Aaron) with Our signs and clear authority,
23:46
to Fir’on (Pharaoh) and his chiefs: but they received them with arrogance for they were very haughty people.
Meaning:-
Haughty: arrogantly superior and disdainful, proud, self important
23:47
They said: “What! Should we believe in two human beings like ourselves, and whose people are our slaves?”
23:48
So they rejected them both [Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)], and ˹so˺ were among those destroyed.
23:49
And indeed We gave Musa (Moses) the Scripture, that they may be guided.
23:50
And We made the son of Maryam (Jesus) and his mother a sign for mankind, and We gave them shelter on a peaceful hillside with flowing water.
23:51
O Messengers! Eat of pure things and do good deeds, certainly I have knowledge of all your actions.
23:52
In fact, your religion is one religion, and I am your only Lord: so fear Me Alone.
23:53
But the people divided their religion among them into sects – each faction, in what it has, rejoicing.

Rejoicing: great joy
23:54
But leave them ˹O Prophet˺ in their confused ignorance for a time.
Meaning:-
Ignorance: lack of knowledge or information, unawareness of.
23:55
Do they think that because We have granted them abundance of wealth and children,
Meaning:-
Abundance: a very large quantity of something.
23:56
Is [because] We hastenn for them good things (in this worldly life so that they will have no share of good things in the Hereafter)? In fact, they do not know.
Meaning:-
Hasten: act quickly, to cause to happen more quickly.
23:57
Verily those who live in awe for fear of their Lord;
Meaning:-
Awe: feeling of fear that is mixed with respect and wonder
23:58
Those who believe in the Signs of their Lord;
23:59
And they who do not associate anything with their Lord
Meaning:-
Associate: partners, nearly equal status, to join as a companion.
23:60
who give to charity whatever they can give, and their hearts are full of fear by the very idea that they shall have to return to their Lord,
23:61
it is they who rush in doing good deeds and try to be the first in attaining them.
23:62
On no soul do We place a burden greater than it can bear; We have a Book of record which shall clearly tell the truth, and they shall not be treated unjustly.
23:63
But their hearts are blind to all this; and their deeds are also different from the believers. They will continue doing their misdeeds
23:64
until when We seize those of them who live in comfort with punishment, at once they are crying [to Allah] for help.
23:65
˹They will be told,˺ “Do not cry for help today. Surely you will never be saved from Us.
23:66
My verses had already been recited to you, but you were turning back on your heels
23:67
in arrogance, talking nonsense about The Qur’an like one telling fables by night.
Meaning:-
Fable: tell fictitious tales, a story not founded on fact:
23:68
Then have they not pondered over the Qur’an, or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers?
23:69
Or do they not recognize their Messenger, that they deny him?
23:70
Or are they really convinced that he is a madman? Nay! In fact he has brought them the Truth and most of them dislike the Truth.
23:71
And if the truth followed their self attractions for desires, then indeed the heavens and the earth and all those who are in them would be destroyed, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away.
23:72
Or are you (O Muhammad) asking them for a payment? But the payment (reward) of your Lord is best, and He is the best of providers.
23:73
And certainly, you (O Muhammad) call them to a Straight Path (true religion Islamic Monotheism).
Meaning:-
Monotheism: the doctrine or belief that there is only one God.
23:74
But indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviated from the Straight Path.
Meaning:-
Deviated: To cause to turn aside or stray..
23:75
˹Even˺ if We had mercy on them and removed their distress, they would still persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.
Meaning:-
Distress: extreme anxiety, sorrow, or pain
Persist: do something repeatedly, continue to exist, continue firmly.
Transgression:: offense, crime, sin, wrong, wrongdoing.
Wandering: traveling aimlessly from place to place.
23:76
And, indeed, We tested them through suffering [as a warning], but they did not bow before their Lord, nor do they pray.
Meaning:-
Bow: a bending of the head or body in respect, submission.
23:77
Until when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair.
Meaning:-
Despair: the complete loss or absence of hope.
23:78
He is the ˹Allah˺ One Who created for you hearing, sight, and intellect. ˹Yet˺ you hardly give any thanks.
Meaning:-
Intellect: ability to understand or mental powers, The ability to learn and reason; the capacity for knowledge.
23:79
And it is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered on the Day of Judgment..
23:80
It is He Who gives life and cause you to die, and in His control is the alternation of the night and the day: then why don’t you understand?
23:81
Rather, they say like what the former peoples (forefathers) said.
23:82
who said: “What! After death when our bodies become dust and bones, could we really be raised to life again?
23:83
We have heard many such threats and so did our forefathers before us. These are nothing but legends of primitive people.”
Meaning:-
Primitive: early in the history of the world or of humankind.
23:84
Say, [O Muhammad], “To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?”
23:85
They will promptly reply: “to Allah!” Ask them: “Then why you don’t use your common sense and believe in Him?”
Meaning:-
Promptly: very quickly or immediately.
23:86
Say: “Who is the Lord of the seven heavens, and the Lord of the Throne (of Glory) Supreme?”
23:87
They will say, “[They belong] to Allah .” Say, “Then will you not fear Him?”
23:88
Ask ˹them also,˺ “In Whose Hands is the authority over all things, protecting ˹all˺ while none can protect against Him, if you ˹really˺ know?”
23:89
They will say, “[All belongs] to Allah .” Say, “Then how are you deluded?”
Meaning:-
Delude: to mislead the mind or judgment of; deceive:
23:90
The fact of the matter is that We have brought them the Truth, and undoubtedly these people are liars.
23:91
No son did Allah beget, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what he created, and they would have tried to dominate one another. Glorified is Allah above what they claim!
Meaning:-
Beget: To produce (children) by sexual reproduction.
23:92
[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, so high is He above what they associate [with Him].
Meaning:-
Associate: Partners, nearly equal status, to join as a companion.
23:93
Say (O Muhammad): ” My Lord! If You would show me (in my lifetime) that with which they are threatened (torment),
Meaning:-
Torment: great mental suffering and unhappiness, or great physical pain.
23:94
My Lord, then do not place me among the wrongdoing people.”
23:95
And indeed We are Able to show you (O Muhammad) that with which We have threatened them.
23:96
Respond to evil with what is best. We know well what they claim.
Meaning:-
Explanation of they claim: Their claims that there are many gods, and that the Prophet is a liar, a poet, etc.
23:97
And say, “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,
Meaning:-
Incitement: the action of provoking unlawful behavior or urging someone to behave unlawfully.
23:98
And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, that they ˹even˺ come near me.”
Meaning:-
Refuge: shelter, protection, safety, security, asylum.
23:99
When death approaches any of them, they cry, “My Lord! Send me back to the world (to life),
23:100
so that I may do good deeds in the world that I have left behind.” Never! This is just a statement which carries no value, it will be too late because there will be a barrier (Barzakh) between them and the world they have just left till the Day they are raised to life again.
Meaning:-
“Barzakh” is an Arabic word: ‘interval, gap, break, partition (The technical meaning of barzakh is the period between a person’s death and his resurrection on the Day of Resurrection)
23:101
On the Day when the Trumpet will be blown, they will neither have worldly relations between them any more, nor will they ask about each other.
23:102
And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] – it is they who are the successful.
23:103
As for those whose weight of good deeds is light, they will be the ones who have lost their souls to live in hell forever.
23:104
The Fire will burn their faces and they will grin therein with their lips displaced.
Meaning:-
Grin: to draw back the lips so as to show the teeth, as a snarling dog or aperson in pain.
23:105
˹It will be said,˺ “Were My Verses (this Quran) not recited to you, but you used to deny them?”
23:106
They will say: “our Lord! Our misfortune overwhelmed us, so we became a misguided people.
Meaning:-
Overwhelmed: to cover over completely, to completely overcome or take over.
23:107
Our Lord! Take us out of this ˹Fire˺. Then if we ever return ˹to sin˺, we will truly be wrongdoers.”
Meaning:-
Wrongdoers: especially a sinner, or transgressor, criminal, dishonestly; an offender.
23:108
In answer to this Allah will say: “Stay here in shame and do not ˹ever˺ plead with Me ˹again˺!
23:109
For you are the same people, who used to make fun of some of My worshippers who prayed: ‘Our Lord, We believe in You; please forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of those who show mercy!’
23:110
but you were ˹so busy˺ making fun of them that it made you forget My remembrance. And you used to laugh at them.
23:111
“I have rewarded them this Day for their patience and constancy: they are indeed the ones that have achieved Bliss…”
Meaning:-
Bliss: the joy of heaven
23:112
[ Allah ] will say, “How long did you remain on earth in number of years?”
23:113
They will reply: “We lived there a day or part of a day; You may ask those who kept the count.”
23:114
It will be said: “Well, now you know that your stay was just a little while – what a pity, you did not believe it then!”
23:115
Did you think that We had created you without any purpose and that you would never return to Us for accountability?”
23:116
Therefore exalted be Allah, the King, the Reality: there is no god but He, the Lord of the Throne of Honour!
23:117
Whoever invokes, besides Allah, another god—for which they can have no proof—they will surely find their penalty with their Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will never succeed.
Meaning:-
Invokes: Fake God, God; Supreme Being, like a god or goddess,
23:118
And, [O Muhammad], say, “My Lord, forgive and have mercy, and You are the best of the merciful.”
24:1
[This is] a surah which We have sent down and made [that within it] obligatory and revealed therein verses of clear evidence that you might remember.
24:2
The [fornicatress] woman or [fornicator] man found guilty of sexual intercourse –- lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity for them in the religion of Allah , if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.
Meaning:-
Fornicatress: a woman guilty of fornication. (Meaning of Fornication: voluntary sexual intercourse between two unmarried persons or two persons not married to each other.
Fornicator: a person who has sex with someone who they are not married.
Lash: strike (someone) with a whip or stick.
24:3
The fornicator shall not marry any but a fornicatoress or a polytheist, and likewise to a fornicatoress, none shall marry her but a fornicator or a polytheist: such marriages are forbidden to the believers.
Meaning:-
Fornicator: a person who has sex with someone who they are not married.
Fornication:voluntary sexual intercourse between two unmarried persons or two persons not married to each other.
Polytheist: belief in more than one god or in many gods.
24:4
And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses – lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient,
Meaning:-
Chaste: not engaging in sexual relations, virgin, or not having any sexual nature or intention,
Lash: strike (someone) with a whip or stick.
Testimony: evidence or proof provided by the existence or appearance of something.
24:5
– except those who repent thereafter and mend their conduct; for Allah is surely Forgiving, Merciful.
Meaning:-
Repent: to feel sorry, regret.
Mend: as to fix or repair or make it better.
24:6
And those who accuse their wives [of adultery] and have no witnesses except themselves – then the witness of one of them [shall be] four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the truthful.
strongMeaning:-
Adultery: voluntary sexual activity (as sexual intercourse) between a married man and someone other than his wife or between a married woman and someone other than her husband also.
Testimonies: a declaration of truth or fact.
24:7
And the fifth (testimony) (should be) the invoking of the Curse of Allah on him if he be of those who tell a lie (against her).
Meaning:-
Testimony: evidence or proof provided by the existence or appearance of something.
24:8
But it will prevent punishment from her if she gives four testimonies [swearing] by Allah that indeed, he is of the liars.
Meaning:-
Testimonies: a declaration of truth or fact.
24:9
And the fifth [oath will be] that the wrath of Allah be upon her if he was of the truthful.
Meaning:-
Wrath: Extreme Anger.
24:10
If it were not for Allah’s grace and mercy upon you, you would have no method of handling these situations. Allah is the Acceptor of Repentance, All-Wise.
24:11
Indeed, those who came up with that ˹outrageous˺ slander are a group of you. Do not regard this incident as only an evil, for it also contains a good lesson for you. They will be punished, each according to their share of the sin. As for their mastermind, he will suffer a tremendous punishment.
Meaning:-
Outrageous: Shockingly bad or excessive.
Slander: the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person’s reputation.
24:12
Why did not the believing men and believing women, when they heard of this slander, think well of their own people, and say: “This is clearly a false accusation?”
Meaning:-
Slander: the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person’s reputation.
24:13
Why did they not produce four witnesses? If they cannot produce the required witnesses, they are the liars in the sight of Allah.
24:14
Were it not for the grace and mercy of Allah towards you in this world and the Hereafter, you would have been severely punished for your involvement in this scandal;
24:15
when you passed on with your tongues and uttered with your mouths that about which you had no knowledge. You took it lightly while it was a very serious offence in the sight of Allah.
Utter: to say something or to make a sound with your voice
24:16
If only you had said upon hearing it, “How can we speak about such a thing! Glory be to You ˹O Lord˺! This is a heinous slander!”
Meaning:-
Heinous: very bad and shocking, extremely bad or evil, horrible, hateful.
Slander: the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person’s reputation.
24:17
Allah admonishes you never to repeat a mistake like this, if you are true believers.
Meaning:-
Admonishes: warn, to caution, advise, or counsel against something.
24:18
And Allah makes clear to you the verses, and Allah is Knowing and Wise.
24:19
Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know.
Meaning:-
Immorality: sinful, evil or bad character or behavior.
24:20
˹You would have suffered,˺ had it not been for Allah’s grace and mercy upon you, and had Allah not been Ever Gracious, Most Merciful.
24:21
O believers! Do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Whoever follows Satan’s footsteps, then ˹let them know that˺ he surely bids ˹all to˺ immorality and wickedness. Had it not been for Allah’s grace and mercy upon you, none of you would have ever been purified from that sin. But Allah purifies whoever He wills. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Meaning:-
Bid: to command; order; direct.
Immorality: sinful, evil or bad character or behavior.
Wickedness: the quality of being evil or morally wrong.
24:22
And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah , and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Meaning:-
Virtue: behavior showing high moral standards.
24:23
Surely those who accuse chaste believing women, unaware (of the evil), are cursed in this world and the hereafter. And they will suffer a tremendous punishment
Meaning:-
Accuse: To find at fault; blame.
Chaste: not engaging in sexual relations, virgin, or not having any sexual nature or intention,
Tremendous: very great in amount, scale, or intensity.
24:24
On a Day when their tongues, their hands and their feet will bear witness (testify) against (misdeeds) them as to what they used to do.
24:25
On that Day, Allah will give them the full reward they deserve, then they will realize that Allah is the perfect in justice.
24:26
Unclean women are for unclean men, and unclean men are for unclean women; and pure women are for pure men, and pure men are for pure women. They are free from the slanderer’s accusations; for them there shall be forgiveness and honorable provision from Allah.
Meaning:-
Slander: the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person’s reputation.
Accusations: a charge of wrongdoing; imputation of guilt or blame.
24:27
O believers! Do not enter any house other than your own until you have asked for permission and greeted its occupants. This is best for you, so perhaps you will be mindful.
Meaning:-
Occupant: a person who resides or is present in a house
Mindful: paying close attention to, conscious or aware of something.
24:28
If you find no one at home, do not enter it until you have been given permission. And if you are asked to leave, then leave. That is purer for you. And Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of what you do.
24:29
There is no blame on you if you enter public places where there is something of benefit for you. And Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
Meaning:-
Public places: non-residential buildings.
Conceal: to hide, to keep secret, to prevent or avoid disclosing, keep secret.
24:30
˹O Prophet!˺ Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their modesty. That is purer for them. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what they do.
Meaning:-
Gaze: to look steadily and intently, as with great curiosity, interest, pleasure,or wonder.
Modesty: appearance intended to avoid impropriety or decency of behavior, speech, dress.
24:31
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their head covers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers, their brothers’ sons, their sisters’ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. Let them not stomp their feet, drawing attention to their hidden adornments. Turn to Allah in repentance all together, O believers, so that you may be successful.
Meaning:-
expose their adornment: hair, body shape, and underclothes.
expose their adornment: i.e., hair, arms, and legs.
stomp: to walk with a loud heavy step.
hidden adornments: something that adds attractiveness; ornament; accessory:
24:32
And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and for Allah has boundless resources and is All-Knowing.
24:33
Those who are unable to marry should keep chaste until Allah gives them enough out of His bounty. If any of your slaves wish to pay for their freedom, make a contract with them accordingly, if you know they have good in them, and give them some of the wealth Allah has given you. Do not force your slave-girls into prostitution for your own worldly gains, if they wish to preserve their chastity; and if anyone forces them into it, then surely after such a compulsion Allah will be forgiving and merciful to them.
Meaning:-
Chaste: virgin, not having any sexual nature or intention, abstaining from extramarital, or from all, sexual intercourse.
24:34
Indeed, We have sent down to you clear verses, along with examples of those who had gone before you, and a lesson to the God-fearing.
24:35
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is in a crystal, the crystal is like a shining star, lit from ˹the oil of˺ a blessed olive tree, ˹located˺ neither to the east nor the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light! Allah guides whoever He wills to His light. And Allah presents examples for the people. For Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.
Meaning:-
Light: This is a metaphor for the light of guidance in the heart of the believer. (Meaning of Metaphor: is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison.)
Olive tree: the olive tree is wholesome because it is located in a central place, so it is hit by sunrays all day-long, and, therefore, the oil is of a premium quality.
24:36
His Light is found in those houses [Mosques of worship] which Allah has sanctioned to be built for the remembrance of His name; where His praise is sung, in the mornings and in the evenings again and again,
Meaning:-
His Light is found in those houses: Lit., “and [ordained] that His name …”, etc.: implying, as the sequence shows, that the spiritual purpose of those houses of worship is fulfilled only by some, and not all, of the people who are wont to congregate in them out of habit.
24:37
by such people whom neither business nor business profit can divert from the remembrance of Allah, nor from regular Prayer, nor from the practice of regular Charity: Their (only) fear is for the Day when hearts and eyes will be transformed (in a world wholly new),-
24:38
That Allah may reward them according to the best of their deeds, and add even more for them out of His Grace: for Allah doth provide for those whom He will, without measure.
Meaning:-
Doth: is an old-fashioned third person singular form of the verb ‘do. ‘
24:39
As for the unbelievers, their deeds will disappear like a mirage in a sandy desert, which the thirsty traveler thinks to be water, but when he comes near, he finds it to be nothing, instead he finds Allah to settle his account – Allah is swift in settling accounts.
Meaning:-
Mirage: is something that you see when it is extremely hot, for example in the desert, and which appears to be quite near but is actually a long way away or does not really exist.
24:40
Or like utter darkness in the deep sea: there covers it a wave above which is another wave, above which is a cloud, (layers of) utter darkness one above another; when he holds out his hand, he is almost unable to see it; and to whomsoever Allah does not give light, he has no light.
Meaning:-
In the deep sea: there covers it a wave above which is another wave:This is another scientific fact mentioned in the Quran: the existence of underwater waves, like layers.
Light: guidance or Wisdom.
24:41
Do you not see that Allah is the One Who is praised by all those who are in the heavens and in the earth? The very birds praise Him as they wing their flight. Each one knows its prayers and how to praise Him, and Allah has full knowledge of all their actions.
24:42
To Allah ˹alone˺ belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And to Allah is the final return.
24:43
Do you not see that Allah makes the clouds move gently, then joins them together, then piles them up in masses, then you see the rain coming from inside them? He also sends down hail from the clouds that look like mountains in the sky, afflicting therewith whom He wills and turning it away from whom He pleases; the flash of His lightning almost takes away sight.
Meaning:-
Afflicting: deeply distressing ; painful, torture, illness, or disaster, to cause suffering, pain.
24:44
Allah alternates the night and the day. Indeed in that is a lesson for those who have vision.
24:45
And Allah has created from water every living creature. Some of them crawl on their bellies, some walk on two legs, and some walk on four. Allah creates whatever He wills. Surely Allah is Most Capable of everything.
24:46
We have certainly sent down distinct verses. And Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.
Meaning:-
distinct: clear, unmistakable, distinguished as not being the same; not identical; separate (sometimes followed by from)
24:47
And the hypocrites say, “We believe in Allah and the Messenger, and we obey.” Then a group of them turns away soon after that. These are not ˹true˺ believers.
Meaning:-
Hypocrite: a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess.
24:48
And as soon as they are called to Allah and His Messenger so he may judge between them, a group of them turns away.
24:49
But if the truth is in their favour, they come to him quickly, obedient.
24:50
Is there in their hearts a disease, or are they in doubt, or do they fear that Allah and His Messenger will act wrongfully towards them? In fact, it is they who are the ˹true˺ wrongdoers.
Meaning:-
Wrongdoers: especially a sinner, or transgressor, criminal, dishonestly; an offender.
24:51
The response of the believers, when they are invited to Allah and His Messenger that he may judge between them, is only to say: We hear and we obey; and these it is that are the successful.
24:52
It is such as obey Allah and His Messenger, and fear Allah and do right, that will win (in the end),
24:53
They swear by Allah their most strongest oaths that if you ˹O Prophet˺ were to command them, they would certainly march forth ˹in Allah’s cause˺. Say, “˹You˺ do not ˹have to˺ swear; your obedience is well known!” Surely Allah is All-Aware of what you do.
24:54
Say: “Obey Allah and obey the Messenger. If you do not, the Messenger is still under obligation to fulfill his duty, as you are under obligation to fulfill yours; and if you obey him, you shall be rightly guided. The Messenger’s duty is only to deliver ˹the message˺ clearly.”
24:55
Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them and will indeed change their fear into security—˹provided that˺ they worship Me, associating nothing with Me. But whoever disbelieves after that – then those are the defiantly disobedient.
24:56
So establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and obey the Messenger; that ye may receive mercy.
24:57
Never think that the disbelievers are causing failure [to Allah ] upon the earth. Their refuge will be the Fire – and how wretched the destination.
Meaning:-
Wretched: very unfortunate in condition or circumstances; miserable; pitiable.
24:58
O believers! Let your servants and those children who have not yet attained puberty ask your permission before coming in to see you on three occasions: before Fajr Salah (dawn prayer), at noon when you put off your clothes, and after the Isha Salah (night prayer). These are your three times of privacy. At other times, there is no blame on you if you, or they, go around visiting one another. Thus Allah makes His revelations (verses) clear to you, for Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Meaning:-
Puberty: the period or age at which a person is first capable of sexual reproduction of offspring.
24:59
And when your children reach the age of puberty, let them seek permission ˹to come in˺, as their seniors do. This is how Allah makes His verses clear to you, for Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Meaning:-
Puberty:the period or age at which a person is first capable of sexual reproduction of offspring.
24:60
As for elderly women past the age of marriage, there is no blame on them if they take off their ˹outer˺ garments, without revealing their adornments. But it is better for them if they avoid this ˹altogether˺. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Meaning:-
Outer garment – a garment worn over other garments. overgarment. aba – a loose sleeveless outer garment made from aba cloth; worn by Arabs. cloak – a loose outer garment.
Adornment: something that adds attractiveness; ornament; accessory.
24:61
There is no blame on the blind, nor there is blame on the lame, nor there is blame on the sick, to eat at your table. Nor shall it be an offence for you to eat in the houses of your own children, or your fathers, or your mothers, or your brothers, or your sisters, or your paternal uncles, or your paternal aunts, or your maternal uncles, or your maternal aunts, or your sincere friends, or in houses with the keys of which you are entrusted. There is no blame on you whether you eat together or apart; however, when you enter the houses, you should greet one another with the greeting of peace prescribed by Allah blessed and pure. Thus Allah makes His revelations (verses) clear to you, so that you may grow in understanding.
Meaning:-
lame: Physically disabled, especially in the foot or leg so as to limp or walk with difficulty
24:62
The ˹true˺ believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, and when they are with him on a public matter, they do not leave without his permission. Indeed, those who ask your permission ˹O Prophet˺ are the ones who ˹truly˺ believe in Allah and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission for a private matter, grant permission to whoever you wish and ask Allah’s forgiveness for them. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
24:63
Do not address the Messenger as you would call each other. Allah certainly knows those of you who slip away, hiding behind others. Let those who disobey his orders beware, lest some trial befall them or a painful punishment be inflicted on them.
Meaning:-
Befall: If something bad or dangerous befalls you, it happens to you.
Inflicted: cause something unpleasant to happen.
24:64
Surely to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. He knows well what you stand for. And ˹on˺ the Day all will be returned to Him, He will inform them of what they did. For Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.
25:1
Blessed is the One Who has revealed Al-Furqan (the criterion to distinguish right from wrong: The Qur’an) to His servant (Muhammad), that he may be a Warner to the worlds;
Meaning:-
Criterion: a principle or standard by which something may be judged or decided.
25:2
˹Allah is˺ the One to Whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, Who has never had ˹any˺ offspring (no son has He begotten), nor does He have a partner in ˹governing˺ the kingdom. He has created everything, ordaining it precisely.
Meaning:-
Offspring: a person’s children, human child or animal child.
Begotten (Begotten is past participle of Beget).: To produce (children) by sexual reproduction.
Precisely: complete accuracy or perfection.
25:3
Yet they have taken besides Him gods who cannot create anything but are themselves created. Nor can they protect or benefit themselves. Nor can they control life, death, or resurrection.
Meaning:-
Resurrection: coming back to life after death.
25:4
Those who disbelieve say: “This ˹Quran˺ is nothing but a lie that he ˹Muhammad˺ has invented, and others have helped him at it, so that they have produced an unjust wrong (thing) and a lie.”
25:5
And they say: “These are the stories of the former people, which he has written down from what is read to him day and night.”
Meaning:-
Former: coming before in time, in an earlier time; before the present time or in the past.
25:6
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “This ˹Quran˺ has been revealed by ˹Allah˺ the One Who knows the secrets of the heavens and the earth. Surely He is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
25:7
And they say ˹mockingly˺, “What kind of messenger ˹Muhammad˺ is this who eats food and goes about in market-places ˹like ourselves for a living˺? If only an angel had been sent down with him to be his co-warner,
Meaning:-
Mockingly making fun of someone or something in a cruel way; derisive.
co: together, partner, assistant, equally or jointly.
25:8
Why he has not been given a treasure or at least a garden from which he could eat?” And these wicked people further say: “You are only following a man who is bewitched.”
Meaning:-
Wicked:evil or morally wrong
Bewitch: cast a spell on and gain control over (someone) by magic.
25:9
See ˹O Prophet˺ how they call you names! So they have gone so ˹far˺ astray that they cannot find the ˹Right˺ Way.
Meaning:-
Astray: Away from the correct path or direction, become lost or mislaid.
25:10
Blessed is the One Who—if He wills—can give you far better than ˹all˺ that: gardens under which rivers flow, and palaces as well.
25:11
In fact, they deny the Hour ˹of the Judgment to come˺. And for the deniers of the Hour, We have prepared a blazing Fire.
Meaning:-
Blazing: burning brightly and with great heat, burning very strongly; very hot.
25:12
When the Hellfire sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring.
Meaning:-
Fury: extreme fierceness or violence, effect of strong wind.
Roaring: a loud, deep cry or sound or a series of such sounds.
25:13
And when they are tossed into a narrow place inside ˹Hell˺, chained together, then and there they will cry out for ˹instant˺ destruction.
25:14
˹They will be told,˺ “Do not cry only once for destruction, but cry many times over!”
25:15
Ask them: “Which is better, this hell or the eternal paradise which the righteous are being promised, which will be the reward of their good deeds and also their final destination;
25:16
wherein they will live forever and get everything that they wish for: and this is the promise worth praying for, which your Lord is going to fulfill.”
25:17
On that Day, He will gather all these people together along with the deities whom they worshiped besides Allah, and ask: “Was it you who misled these servants of Mine, or did they choose to go astray themselves?”
Meaning:-
Deities: godships, a god or goddess (in a polytheistic religion), the state of being a god; divine nature; godhood.
Astray: into error, away from the correct path or direction.
25:18
Those deities will answer: “Glory be to You! It was not befitting for us that we could take any guardian besides You, but You let them and their forefathers enjoy the comforts of worldly life until they forgot the Reminder, and thereby became worthless people.”
Meaning:-

25:19
Thus your gods ‘Deities‘ will deny all that you profess today. Then you shall neither be able to avert your punishment nor shall you get any help from anywhere; and every one among you who is guilty of wrongdoing, We shall make him taste the mighty punishment.
Meaning:-
Deities: godships, a god or goddess (in a polytheistic religion), the state of being a god; divine nature; godhood.
Avert: to turn away or aside (one’s eyes or thoughts).
25:20
We never sent any messenger before you ˹O Muhammad˺, who did not eat food and go about in market-places. We have made some of you ˹people’ a trial for others. Will you ˹not then˺ be patient? And your Lord is All-Seeing.
25:21
Those who do not expect to meet Us ‘on the Day of Judgement’ say, “Why were not angels sent down to us, or ‘why’ do we ‘not’ see our Lord?” They have certainly been carried away by their arrogance and have entirely exceeded all limits.
25:22
˹But˺ on the Day they will see the angels, there will be no good news for the sinners, and ‘the angels’ will say, “There is a barrier forbidden (to you) altogether!”
Meaning:-
Explanation of the Ayat: They will not be allowed to enjoy any of the felicity or peace which will be the normal state of the new world of Reality. Their own past will stand as a barrier to shut them off.
25:23
Then We will turn to whatever ˹good˺ deeds they did ‘in this life’, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust.
Meaning:-
Explanation of the Ayat: The false hopes they built on in this life, and the deeds did under the shadow of such false hopes will be dissipated as if they were dust flying about in the wind. They will have no value whatever.
25:24
˹But˺ on that Day the residents of Paradise will have the best settlement and the finest place to rest.
25:25
On that Day when the heavens shall burst asunder with clouds and the angels will be sent down ranks after ranks,
Meaning:-
Asunder: into pieces, apart; divided.
25:26
True authority on that Day will belong ˹only˺ to the Most Compassionate ‘Allah’. And it will be a hard day for the disbelievers.
25:27
And ˹beware of˺ the Day the wrongdoer will bite his hands ˹in regret˺ and say, “Oh! I wish I had followed the Way along with the Messenger!
Meaning:-
Wrongdoer: especially a sinner, or transgressor, criminal, dishonestly; an offender.
25:28
Woe to me! I wish I had never taken so-and-so as a close friend.
Meaning:-
Woe: sadness, great sorrow or distress.
25:29
“He indeed led me astray from the Reminder ‘this Quran’ after it had come to me. And Satan has always betrayed humanity.
Meaning:-
Betray: mislead, deceive, to be unfaithful, an act of deliberate disloyalty,
25:30
Then the Messenger will say: “O my Lord! Truly my people took this Qur’an for just foolish nonsense.”
25:31
That is how We made for every prophet an enemy among the criminals, but your Lord is sufficient for you ‘O Muhammad’ as a Guide and Helper.
25:32
The disbelievers say, “Why is not the Qur’an revealed to him all at once? ˹We have sent it˺ as such ˹in stages˺ so We may reassure your heart with it. And We have arranged it in right order.
25:33
The other reason for this method is that any time they come to you with an argument, We reveal to you the Truth and properly explain it.
25:34
Those who will be dragged into Hell ‘prone‘ on their faces will be in the worst place, for they had lost the Way by taking an utterly wrong stand.
Meaning:-
Prone: lying face downward.
25:35
And indeed We gave Musa (Moses) the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)], and placed his brother Harun (Aaron) with him as a helper;
25:36
and said to them: “Both of you should go to the people who have denied Our Revelations (Signs).” But those people rejected Our Messengers, as a result We destroyed them with utter destruction.
25:37
Likewise, the people of Nuh (Noah) We drowned when they rejected the Messengers and made them an example for mankind; and We have prepared a painful punishment for such wrongdoers.
Meaning:-
Wrongdoer: a person who behaves illegally or dishonestly; an offender.
25:38
And [We destroyed] ‘Aad and Thamud and the companions of the well and many generations between them.
25:39
For each We set forth ˹various˺ lessons, and each We destroyed with ˹total˺ destruction.
25:40
They ‘Unbelievers’ have certainly passed by the city ˹of Sodom˺, which had been showered with a dreadful rain ˹of stones˺. Have they not seen its ruins? But they do not expect to be resurrected.
Meaning:-
Sodom: a city destroyed by Allah for its wickedness.
Dreadful: causing great fear or terror, involving great suffering, extremely bad or serious, terrible, shocking
Ruins: state of being destroyed or severely damaged.
Resurrected: to bring (a dead person) back to life.
25:41
When they see you ˹O Prophet˺, they only make fun of you, ˹saying,˺ “Is this the one that Allah has sent as a messenger?
25:42
He would have almost tricked us away from our gods, had we not been [so] steadfastly attached to them!” ˹But˺ soon they will know, when they face the punishment, who is far astray from the ˹Right˺ Way.
25:43
Have you seen ˹O Prophet˺ the one who has taken their own desires as their god? Then would you be responsible for him?
25:44
Or do you think that most of them listen or understand? They are only like cattle—no, more than that, they are astray from the ˹Right˺ Way

Astray: into error, away from the correct path or direction.
