Chapter 44 : Ad-Dukhān – 59 Verses

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

44:1

Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings].

44:2

We swear by the Glorious Book

44:3

By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear,
Meaning:-
Manifest: clear or obvious to the eye or mind.

44:4

that We revealed this Qur’an in a blessed night (Layla-tul Qadr); for We wanted to forewarn mankind.
Meaning:-
Forewarn: warn in advance

44:5

In that night every matter is decided wisely

44:6

A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing,

44:7

The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, mark this, if you are true believers!

44:8

There is no god but Him. He gives life and death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.

44:9

Yet they play about in doubt.

44:10

Well! Wait for the Day when the sky will pour down visible smoke.

44:11

Enveloping all mankind; this will be a painful punishment.

44:12

Then the mankind will say: “Our Lord! Remove from us this punishment, surely we have become real believers.”

44:13

But how can the acceptance of Our Message at that time be beneficial to them? A Messenger (Muhammad), who made the things clear, has come to them

44:14

Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad) and said: “One (Muhammad) taught (by a human being), a madman!”

44:15

Indeed, We will remove the punishment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief].

44:16

The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution.
Meaning:-
Assault: a violent attack
Retribution: the distribution of rewards and punishments in a future life

44:17

Before them We had put the people of Fir’on (Pharaoh) to the same test, when an honorable Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses) ] came to them,

44:18

[Saying], “Render to me the servants of Allah . Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger,”

44:19

Do not hold yourselves above Allah, surely I have brought to you a clear authority.

44:20

And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death:
Meaning:-
refuge:-: shelter, protection, safety, security, asylum.

44:21

“But if you believe me not, then keep away from me and leave me alone.”

44:22

And [finally] he [Musa (Moses)] called to his Lord that these were a criminal people.

44:23

[ Allah said], “Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued.
Meaning:-
Pursued: follow, chase.

44:24

And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned.”

44:25

How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir’aun’s (Pharaoh) people] left.

44:26

And agriculture and grand palaces!

44:27

And means of luxury and comfort which they used to enjoy!

44:28

Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people.

44:29

Neither Heaven nor earth sheds tears for them; nor were they given a respite.
Meaning:-
Respite: rest, break, interval, relaxation.

44:30

We did deliver aforetime the Children of Israel from humiliating Punishment,

44:31

From Fir’aun (Pharaoh). Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors.
Meaning:-
Haughty: proud, self-important, arrogantly superior and disdainful.
Transgressors: a person who is actually breaking the law, offend; sin.

44:32

And We certainly chose them by knowledge over [all] the worlds.

44:33

We showed them signs in which there was a clear trial.

44:34

Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying,

44:35

“There is nothing beyond our first death, and we shall not be raised again.

44:36

Then bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful.”

44:37

Are these people better than the people of Tubba and those who were before them? We destroyed them all only because they had become criminals.

44:38

It was not for a play that We created the heavens the earth and all that lies between them.

44:39

We have created them to reveal the truth, but most of them do not understand.

44:40

Verily, the Day of Judgement (when Allah will judge between the creatures) is the time appointed for all of them,

44:41

On that Day no one shall be able to protect his friend, nor shall they receive any help

44:42

except those to whom Allah will show His Mercy: for it is He Who is the All-Mighty, the All Merciful.

44:43

Indeed, the tree of zaqqum
Meaning:-
Zaqqum (Arabic): is a tree that “springs out of the bottom of hell-fire” or Jahannam.

44:44

Will be the food of the sinners,

44:45

Like boiling oil, it will boil in the bellies,

44:46

Like the boiling of hot water.

44:47

A voice will be heard: “Seize him and drag him into the depth of the hell,

44:48

“Then pour over his head the Penalty of Boiling Water,

44:49

then the voice will say: “Taste it; you were such a powerful noble!

44:50

This is the punishment which you use to doubt.”

44:51

Surely those who guard (against evil) are in a secure place,

44:52

Within gardens and springs,

44:53

Wearing [garments of] fine silk and brocade, facing each other.
Meaning:-
Brocade: usually silk, a rich silk fabric with raised patterns in gold and silver.

44:54

Thus. And We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.

44:55

They will call therein for every [kind of] fruit – safe and secure.

44:56

They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of Hellfire

44:57

A grace from your Lord; this is the great achievement.

44:58

Certainly, We have made this (Quran) easy in your language, in order that they may remember.

44:59

So watch, [O Muhammad]; indeed, they are watching [for your end].
